I just posted "Just Ducky" without doing it as a "new topic." No one has responded, so maybe I should have. These were taken during a hike to Cavandish Falls in Vermont with a Canon digital. Though the panoramic views were breathtaking, I thought the little details at ground level made interesting shots -- and I never knew there were so many different varieties of mushrooms!

very nice.... I agree the panoramic views can be breathtaking but the hidden treasure deserve a second look too. I like them.
Personally I find them lacking in contrast and composition. However, I'm no one to talk. Still finding my way. But it is something that I have learned and understand the concept of.
#1 . . . the leaf is centered; not an interesting comp
#2 . . . bland; no contrast, subject is difficult to see
#3 . . . uninteresting
#4 . . . " " "
these are my opinions and not meant to discourage or impugn your work.
I'm not sure if you're new to photography, but start reading around the site and get some insight as to how to better your work. Vision, composition, and of course have fun. It doesn't have to be all techie, but there are some guidelines (if you will) that will be helpful. If you're a snap and shooter, then don't worry about it and share away :)
Always think about your background and try to simplify it as much as possible - helps to make the subject of the photograph "pop."
Hello, on the first I love the colors. It might benefit from a little sharpening and crop it to reflect the Rule of Thirds. You can look that up on google. It's a guide to composition. I think it is more artistic with the red leaf not centered. I'll attach a copy with these fixes done so you can see what I mean. I also am attaching another with all of the above done plus auto levels. I depends on what look you are going for as far as that and the original go.

same edit with levels done
With some cropping the image can easily fit into the "rule of thirds." Also I raised the levels of contrast. It took about 5 seconds. I love the attention to detail in the shots!
I really like the second photo too. Very interesting mushrooms and pretty setting. It pretty much used the Rule of thirds which is very good. I did a couple edits just to show you what could be done with an editing program if you wanted to make some changes. If you could have blurred the entire background the blur would have worked. I'm not so fond of the blurring as you did it. I prefer the first version better. What I did was auto levels, auto contrast and auto sharpen. On the second edited one I used vignette in case you feel strongly about decreasing the appearance of the outer edges. Just suggestions. Don't worry if you don't like them.

Thanks - I like the middle one best. I appreciate the input and am enjoying learning how to improve photos using software; it's not cheating -- it's no different than dark-room tricks of the old days.
I love the Indian paint brushes , I think it would be cool if you got down low on your belly to photograph them.... Kind of like a bugs perspective .

I like #1,2,& 3, however, # 4 looks as if I'm wearing someones prescription glasses (not mine) That is just the way it looks to me. To each his own. All that really matters is how it looks to you & the pleasure you derive from it.
I personally like the Third shot just like it is. I think the red in the leaf litter compliment the red mushroom. I love all the contrasting textures. I wouldn't crop it down at all. In fact I think it would benefit from more of the litter showing around the two mushrooms. I am not an expert that is just what I am thinking as I look at it.
I would crop the top off of no.3 for starters.....
Very interesting... I was ready for that one on the left to say "Take Me To Your Leader"....LOL
