I have a pretty reasonable glass library, but need one or two more to round it out. Right now the one that I want to concentrate on is to shoot both, sports and wildlife. So it has to be fast, and have a longe range. I have a 70-300mm f4.5-5.6, and a 80-200mm f2.8 lens. Ideally I think that I'd like something in the 200-400mm range and fast, maybe f2.8.

I'm a Nikon user and would appreciate some suggestions for a lens as described, if possible. The least expensive solution would be preferred. Thanks all!

I do not think you can buy anything 2.8 200-400 for $1,500.00.

Take a look at the Sigma 50-500. It is a 4.5-6.3. On ebay goes for $1500 or so. It is on my list. Or the Nikon 80-400, it is a 4.5-5.6. About the same price. I have this one and am very happy with it. Sharp in the right light, focus could be faster.
With the 50-500 I want to put a 1.4 TC and 1.7 TC on it to get more mm's. A friend has one and if the light is good it is a great lens. It has a sweet spot of a around 40- 50 yards for your subject. If it is farther than that you have to use your feet, lol.

I have the Sigma 50-500 and it certainly has it's limitation but good photography is possible with it just don't stop it down past f11 and you need to use a tripod or at least a mono-pod. I am saving up for the new Nikon 80-400 when it comes out.

The problem is that you want a f/2.8 lens that's extremely long but don't have the budget for it.

Cheap + fast + long

Pick two.

This is as cheap as it gets and it's out of your price range and not that much longer than your 200mm

Look at Nikon's 1.5 extender. It will reduce your 2.8 to 3.5 but it's the cheapest way to go and it won't degrade your photos.

the problem is: you want others to do your research for you.

Rent. Lens rentals.com or rent glass.com. I don't know where you're shopping but for a 2.8-4 you're looking at 5-10K. Glass is a great investment. I have a 20 year old 50mm 1.2 that works perfectly. Maybe you can also check older lenses with manual focus. Check Kenrockwell.com for his recomendations. He's usually spot on. Good luck!

The closest thing to what you want is the 200-400 AF-S VR f4. It is $7000.00.

You cannot put a TC on a lens with a 5.6 aperture as it will kill the AF in anything but really bright light.

Nikon does not have 1.5 extender, it is 1.4 and it make your 2.8 an f4.

The terrible truth is anything at f4 or faster and at 400mm or longer is incredibly expensive. The 400 2.8 is $9000.00

Of course you can buy used and get something in the 4500-6000 range!

The cheapest option is to walk up closer.
