OK.... what did I do wrong?

These were shot on Christmas day and the weather outside was very overcast and gloomy. I thought I had the camera set to compensate for this but obviously I did something wrong. The skin tones and colors came out just about right but when cropping them down they get all noisy and pixilated. I am not doing any extreme cropping down so I am not pushing the limit of the crops. Anybody have any idea what I did wrong or how to improve for the next time?
Shot with a Canon T2i. Originals have been stored in case anyone wants to see the full version.

Your ISO is high resulting in a noisy picture (grain).

For shooting outside during the day, try to keep your ISO between 100 and 200. You will see a huge improvement in the quality of the image.

For the future pick out a subject and shoot it at different ISO's letting your camera set set shutter speed and f-stop. Do this with a low light and average light subject After examining these you can determine what the maximum ISO you are willing to accept. This is a good thing to do anytime you get a new camera to see how the sensor does.

I'm no expert but the first thing to hit me was high iso setting. Take it off auto and set it for conditions. 100 - 200 during day should work. Shoot in RAW format also. This way even if you underexpose because of the lower iso you have a less noisy shot and will most likely be able to recover it in pp. the canon editing software is actually quite good if you dont have other post processing software.

Bottom line, get out of auto mode. Just my $.02.

I think the pics turned out nice. Gloomy/overcast weather is the best light ever! It gets nicely diffused, no hard shadows, speckled light or hot spots. Clouds act as a giant soft-box, the only con is that you have to shoot at higher ISO's, but that's not a big deal in digital. I shoot at 1600 all the time, you just have to clean it up in post.

As a general rule, shoot at the lowest ISO possible. In your first pic, there is no movement, so you could have shot at a slower shutter speed like 1/125 which would enable you to lower your ISO because 1/125 lets more light in than 1/400. You only need to shoot at 1/400 if you're trying to stop motion, like a sporting event or an airshow.

But… when shooting in a strong overcast where you have to increase your ISO (you don't want to shoot below 1/60 unless you're on a tripod) then increasing your ISO is fine as long as you clean it up in post. There are programs and plug-ins that will do just that. I use Imaginomic Noiseware to smooth out noise from high ISO's.

The pic below was shot at ISO 1600… no grain!
