Education and intelligence are not the same thing, but the more intelligent tend tone better educated, and the better educated tend to be more intelligent. There is a strong correlation between the two that is only somewhat reduced by other factors.

If the average atheist is more intelligent than the average practitioner of religion, it does not mean that there can be no super intelligent people who are also believers, or that every atheist will be more intelligent than every religious person. It is illogical to navigate a trend by drawing conclusions from its exceptions.
