I am using mtn lion and am trying to find a way to dissable my Iphoto as default editor, but cant seem to be able to do it. I did search for simple steps but no dice. It seems that the MENU function/button is missing when I open iPhoto. There doesnt seem to be an option to dissable it. My beef with the iPhoto is the way it automatically grabs my pics and then converts them to jpegs.
And thats what I dont want, as I would prefer to use PE-11 instead and chose save in format myself.
right clicking on the pics (prior) to importing does not give me the option to chose another editor. Looking for the option like:
" open all files of this type with Photoshop element 11 editor"
Simple tip very much appreciated as I am sure there are other with similar issues on mac.

Hi there, I had the same issue, it drove me crazy, this is how I solved it.
1.Click on your iPhoto icon to open it up.
2.Click on the "iPhoto" in the top left of the tool bar or use the short cut "Command" and "," (comma button) at the same time
3.Click on "Preferences" (Skip #3 if you used the shortcut)
4.Click on the "General Tab"
5.Several boxes will appear one will be "Connecting camera opens:
6.Click on the up/down arrows in the dialog box and choose what you want to happen when you connect a camera (or a card into a reader).
On my Mac I have 5 choices, Aperture, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, iPhoto, Image Capture, and No application. I presume since you have Adobe Elements installed it will be on your menu.
I chose "No application" that way when I insert a card to the reader (or connect a camera to the computer) nothing happens until I open the program of my choice and then import the photos under the file tab of the program I just opened.
If this does not work let me know and I will try to figure out what I missed. Good Luck.
Hi ST3V3M, great information given here and I will be reading this site a lot in the future. At first glance it looks like this pertains to locating/showing pictures in "Finder" which is after they are downloaded to the computer. At this point I believe the OP's issue is getting them into the computer (correct me if I am wrong) into the proper application. I had the same problem and called Apple Support (Great People) and they talked me through it.

Thanks for that great tip on how to change your auto opening program me - have been wanting to do that for ages but didn't know how.

Under preferences, General section. Make "connecting cammera opens" choose "No Application". Now you're good to go!

Just to be clear Under Preferences "in iPhoto" not to be confused with "System Preferences".
Thanks to all of you for great suggestion, However, There is no MENU available where I could chose preferences. None, and thats the problem. there is not even a hidden one, Ive tried. Must be another way I am sure.
So the biggest problem is the non existent menu, the only thing on top of frame says iPhoto.
On the bottom the only things are: search, zoom, slide show, info, edit, create, add to, share.

On a Mac, in the upper menu bar all the way to the left is a bold type heading of "iPhoto". Click on that and you will see a choice of "preferences".

Nope, this is how mine is displayed on iMac 27, mountain lion

Between the apple icon and the File menu selector is should say
iPhoto. Click on iPhoto and you should get a sub menu whose second item is
preferences.
Keep plugging away.

Did you click on the iPhoto icon at the bottom tool bar to open iPhoto first? Or maybe you need to get out of full screen mode to see what you need to see? Maybe delete and re-install iPhoto?
If you still have problems call or contact Apple Support at
www.apple.com or 800-275-2273

Are you absolutely sure that you are running iPhoto? See my menu capture below. It has always looked this way. If you don't see this then I have no idea what you are running, and I would run to the nearest apple store and ask one of the "geniuses" for help.
Thank you all contributing ideas to my problem. Its solved and worked like charm, thanks Bob!!!
I had to have browser open and the iPhoto active then the iPhoto shoved up in Safari browser menu. I set it to no action, so I can manualy chose to open memory card folder ( well, with the PE-11)
