Keep in mind that "Exposure" is the desired end product and it has 3 elements: Sensitivity (Sensor or Film); Intensity (Aperture); and Time (shutter speed). Two stops increase would allow a two f/stop increase (e.g. f/8 to f/16) or a two step decrease in shutter speed (e.g. 1/300 from 1/75)

The IS lens claim is referring to being able to hand-hold the camera at a shutter speed of one fourth (e.g. at 1/100 in stead of 1/400 sec for a 400mm lens) and still have an acceptably sharp image.

Another like-thinker!
I cringe when I read that aperture controls the "amount" of light. Amount can apply to time as well. Intensity is my word of choice to describe how aperture affects exposure.

Hey, I learned that you can create your own f/stops with a reflector today. On Creative Live.

When f/stops get stale and hard, like bread, I cut them into a wedge shape and use them for door stops!

I think it's also important, for novices like me to remember that aperture affects your DOF. It's not just about light. When you are new, it's easy to forget that. When I got my 50mm F1.8 I was so excited to go out and shoot in low light. It quickly became apparent to me very quickly that you really have be spot on when focusing at F1.8. It was a good lesson.

Very good advice. My comment was specifically addressing how aperture affects exposure.

I ONLY buy my f/stops from Adorama or B&H!

And even without an adapter, if you have a set of needle-nose pliers, a chisel, a hammer, and some chewing gum, you can get the Nikon f-stops to fit the Canon camera...

I understood what you were saying. I wanted to add to it, just in case there was anyone at my skill level reading this. It's taken me a while to get the whole exposure triangle thing, and I still have to think about it. It doesn't come naturally to me like it does for you. Experience is a wonderful thing. :-D

I also find the concept of a camera giving a few extra f/stops confusing because the lens deals in f/stops. I think additional ISO settings should be thought of as "additional stops of light".

Stops are used as shorthand, the proper way to describe is EV (exposure value).

OK! This time YOU said it, the forbidden "EV"; I've been "spoken to" enough since the last time I used the term. It seem that some members liken the introduction of the term to suggesting we all use the Zone System. This time you get to explain it to them. Hint: Have them read:

When a photographer says a particular camera gives him a couple of extra fstops, what is he referring to?

Let's not forget that the 5D Mark III ISO also goes down to 50...quite a range of ISO's.

When you wish to reply to a specific post, (as I am replying to yours), at the bottom of that post, click the tab labeled Quoter Reply. It will "quote" the post, and you should then reply directly behind the closing term "[/quote]".
