If Religion makes you a better person then, be there a god or not, enjoy and do not let others thoughts trouble you. I personally do not believe but will defend your right to do so.

Religion responds to humankind's need for certainty and security. This need, in turn, is impossible to satisfy because the only certainty humans can arrive at by using their brain and power to observe is change.

Ironically, from the moment you are born, you begin to die. That's one hell of an important bit of reality--in my opinion. Moreover, the simplest answer to the problems of living is to do unto others as you would have done to yourself. You can solve many problems by adhering to that maxim.

I agree with you, unless, of course, one is a masochist. I would also like to add that Moses didn't invent morality and goodness when he wrote the ten commandments. Many cultures long before Moses had established social mores as did many deities before the birth of Jesus professed a virgin birth, miracle working, the crucifixion and a resurrection. Mythology at best.

I commend you for the long and thoughtful response you offer, but as any scientist or researcher will attest, you can't prove a negative. As a matter of fact, you can't prove a positive either, only offer a statistically high degree of probability.

Like you, I have my problems with organized religions, but as a statistician I personally believe that there is a greater probability that a higher intelligence is responsible for the universe in which I live than shear chance.

I don't believe in a personal God who cares a twit about me, but I am still grateful for life, opportunity, beauty and so much that I could never have given myself. For this belief that actually requires no faith I am content and at peace. I feel no need or desire to change the beliefs of others who may disagree.

There is a difference between Intelligence and Wisdom.
Many Intelligent people are not very wise.

I don't need saved...why do you think you need saved? Is it due to something someone told you when you were a child? Are you somehow stuck in some fantasy world?

Hey, it is JUST a STORY...believe it if you like or are you at a point where you are hoping it is true and posting it someone shores up you sagging faith?

"JUST a STORY?" Looks like you're attempting to convince yourself. :-)

My personal "faith" in God is by far, stronger today, than when I first believed.

It is well known liberal or progressive men are far more often effeminate compared to conservative men. The girly men here are more likely to be effeminate progressives or one could also say the progressive men here are more likely to be effeminate than not so when they threaten you you are probably going to get a purse beating in the worst case scenario. :XD :XD

And Moses did not write the 10 commandments- he copied them from the Egyptian Book of Life that was around long before him. Oh and remember Moses was in Egypt for a long time - so he writes. His story of his escape with the Jews from Egypt and the parting of the Red Sea is just another quite embellished auto-biography in my opinion.

From my personal experience over the past 20+ yrs I don't find religion in ones life any more helpful than practicing a Christian based lifestyle.

I understand completely...you're now old and are hoping there's something after you die since every day that passes is one day closer to the end...completely understandable.

Again and again we ask - "SAVED FROM WHAT"?
TWO important facts here both Heaven and Hell are mythology and SO IS LIFE AFTER DEATH.
I don't know how many deaths you have been present at but in the many I have witnessed/been present at - none, under any circumstances said anything about a calming light, an out reached hand or demons coming after them. Death is final and that is it.

Intelligence is innate...wisdom is learned. You can't teach someone to be intelligent however, you can guide someone to wisdom.

Croce, I'm sure you've had a million responses, yet I feel compelled to add my own without reading others first. If you speak of 'religious' as being those associated with any organized sect or church, I might tend to agree. However, I see two flaws. The first is that too many intelligent people are so infatuated with their own intelligence and that of others that it becomes a religion in itself. It has been said that in America we worship everything from Jesus to Jack Daniels. The second flaw I see is that an atheist would have no more success proving that their is no God than a believer would dave in proving that there is. Both groups may be equally lacking in intelligence.

Here is where your postulation goes wrong jcave. Atheists know that the non existence of god is unprovable. Most deist insist that some ancient tome, such as the bible proves that god does exist. Atheists do not really care to argue these points. They just want the theist to stop trying to convert them. Their doggedness and pursuit goes far beyond minor annoyance. The cry of the poor Atheist being preached the "truth" by the theist is LMTFA!

Actually, you don't understand.

Through the passage of time, God has proved Himself faithful and loving to me.

It has little to do with me and everything to do with God Himself.

Blessings
