I just can't seem to decide if the eos 7d or the 5d Mark II is better fit for sports/action photography. I am thinking about getting the eos 7 d because of the 8fps but is a full frame sensor camera like the 5d Mark II better for sports/action photography? Please comment. Thanks.

I would go with the 7D, I have a 40D, that kicks but on my 5D when doing sports...also the crop sensor makes your 200 zoom a 320mm...even better for sports.
My 5D really shines when it comes to low light and portraits.
So just depends on how you are planning on using it. I went through the same struggle :)
Good Luck

If....You are already a proficient photographer, and...with a modicum of talent....And own a ton of Canon gear, then get the best of the two...After all...It's just a camera!

Now if you have just put down the latest Sports Illustrated, and want to become a pro photographer, just by throwing tons of money at a Canon, then forget it! Go out and purchase a Panasonic Lumix LX-7 point and shoot, and have fun and save your money!

Do you realize how many broken dreams I am finding at my local Pawn One's here in Spokane, WA. and elsewhere, and all of them have "Canon" or "Nikon" scribed on the front of these forlorn pieces of photographic disappointments!

I was stationed in Ketchikan, AK. in 1969, with a $30.00 Pawnshop Olympus rangefinder, and a 1949 Selenium G.E. light meter to get my exposures correct!

The crew at USCG Base Ketchikan, were fascinated over the proficiency I wheeled with this humble little piece of cast off photo excellence!

There was a young man named Drew Swanson that worked with me and was of the opinion that I needed a good lesson in humility, and went up to the Exchange and purchased a $350.00 Nikormat with a 3X adapter, and proceeded with his three roll attempt and pitiful attempt to humiliate me photographically! His attempt was greeted by the crew with comments like this...Go buy a Brownie Hawkeye, and try again!

I taught digital photography here in Spokane at the Community College, and have seen all too often people like Drew Swanson that throw buckets of money at a camera in the attempts of becoming a photographer. And later get $50.00 from Pawn One for their CANON or NIKON attempt at buying a hobby!

Now if you are not one of these money tossing pie in the sky dream chasing Photographers, then I wish you the best in all your endeavors!

Here are a couple Point and shoot shots for your entertainment.

Go with the 7D all the way for action photos.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with the 7d because I currently have been doing sports action photography and was looking to upgrade my camera. I'm 16 and still learning but I have a big passion for photography. Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment. I will see if I can post some of my work.

Jim, I'd suggest the 7D also. It's probably the "top of the line" in Canon APS-C bodies, has an excellent AF system, and speed out the wazoo. If you can hold off just a little, when the 7D/II comes out later this year (??) the original bodies will hit the used market, and you could well score a winner for a good discount. Just a Thought.

Jim:

Excellent shots! I suggest just for fun and games without getting a hernia, to tote a good point and shoot just for general grins and giggles. I prefer the Lumix brand, especially the LX-5 or 7 with the LEICA optics!

I shoot Pentax...I own two bodies...K10d and K-7. I own some wonderful lenses though not Pentax. They are, Tamron 70-200 F:2.8, Tamron 90mm macro, Sigma 50mm macro, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 17-70 F:2.8-4.5, and an Opteka 6.5mm Fisheye...I am a disable Veteran on a limited income, and can afford general optics that won't require a second mortgage to finance them.

Keep up the good work!

For a little less money, consider a used 1D mk III from KEH. Sure it's only 10 MP but those are 10 extremely high quality MPs. The body itself is a tank and an amazing camera.

Tims has a good point on the 1D Mk111. I had the 7D and it is excellent, though the x1.7 does give almost too much nearness. So with the new 1Dx coming in, the 1D Mk1V is now available second hand which is what I went for. It is only x1.3, 16 Mp, but amazing with its 10fps. So I would suggest that or the Mk 111 in pref to the 7D. But it still may be worth waiting to see if the new 7D Mk11 is good, and if it takes the firmware improvement to the 7D much beyond.

I have both cameras. I LOVE my 5dmkII but for action/sports, the 7D beats it most of the time. Go for it!

8-) 8-) 8-)
i own a 5D MkII. It is not designed for action photography. The camera is great for stills, weddings, etc. The 5D MkIII has the same AF as the 1Dx and is a great action shooter. AF can be expensive. GL

I do not believe they have the same AF. The 1Dx has facial recognition and will track a moving subject based on their facial features. I do not think the 5D has that.

Digiphot2 : wasted words. I am finding that on UHH it is all about equipment and little about talent.

I tend to read Captn's comments and few others when it comes to seriously discussing the role of the photographer and the interaction with the photo.

I have been looking at American Photo online and it is all about talent and little about equipment.

I discovered I have little talent so a p&ps is all I need.

Lastly, the pawn shops in So Florida are a treasure trove about 2 months after Christmas!

Canon Rumors has been saying early to mid 2014 for release of a 7D MK II, don't think we will likely be seeing it soon.
So if the guy needs a camera for sports action now he should jump on a 7D which will still be a viable camera even after the new one comes out.
Canon Direct has refurb 7Ds for $1,200 which is a decent deal.
