"(And in)" was NOT spoken - Google and listen to the audio.. The "(and in)" was added by the good ole AP. gotta love the truth in the news media.

They just added what any intelligent person would automatically know...the fact they put it in parentheses tells us that.

Bmac, you say you disagree with me but did you really read what I wrote...there was hardly anything there to disagree with. I didn't write anything that placed me one way or the other.

What I disagreed with is boldfaced below, as what you posted was not the actual quote.

here is the actual quote...
"If we don't deepen our ports all along the Gulf - (and in) places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla. - if we don't do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we'll lose jobs," Obama said.

well it is the actual quote, anything in parentheses tells us that part has been added and not part of the quote...we all know that.

What sillyness. If Obama walked on water you would complain that he couldn't swim.
His IQ is somewhere between 130 and 140 and say what you will about him and his policies, but he is not stupid.
Why don't you tell us who you expect to win the next election instead of complaining about the last.

That would depend on on whose water he is walking on, now wouldn't it?

Frank makes a valid point. You don’t become the President of the United States by being stupid. I also agree that we stop with the name calling (on both sides) and start addressing upcoming candidates and policy positions. Conservatives will never accept the policies and positions of President Obama and further ridicule and bashing only further divides us as a country. We need to start finding areas we agree on and build from there, I know that’s much easier said than done but tell me what other viable options do we as a nation have?

Frank T has to stop bashing Conservatives and Republicans and accept Guns and speak out against abortion and not think of himself as better than others and... and wait, I am thinking...

This is America and as such Frank doesn't have to stop anything. He has as you do a fundamental right to his beliefs and positions. You put your demands out there only to throw the brakes on any meaningful dialogue that could lead to progress in other areas in which we may agree. Stopping government waste comes to mind. You can't go into a negotiation with that little kid attitude of "its my ball so if I don't get to make up the rules I'm taking my ball and going home".

Brackets are used in quotes to help with context or understanding. The words in parantheses in this case (and in) changed the actual meaning of the quotation, whether it was simply a gaffe by the President or not.

Quotation with parentheses incorrectly used in place of brackets:

“It (driving) imposes a heavy procedural workload on cognition that . . . leaves little processing capacity available for other tasks” (Salvucci and Taatgen 107).

Note: Parentheses are used incorrectly in place of brackets in this example, making the inserted word look like it could be part of the original text.

Above from:

http://writingcommons.org/research/integrate-evidence/incorporate-evidence/inserting-or-altering-words-in-a-direct-quotation

"(Using parentheses in quotes) seemed like a good idea," he said.
If you are using parentheses in quotes, it usually means you need to take a hard look at what you've written. Parentheses in quotes are:

Weak, disruptive writing.

A signal that you likely have not set up the quote correctly.

An invitation for readers to trust us even less, wondering what we've left out, covered up, changed or added.

Above from:

http://commonsensej.blogspot.com/2004/04/using-parentheses-in-quotes-seemed.html

I believe the AP writer improperly, by changing the meaning of the quotation, added the words so the President would not appear foolish.

I also believe an actual quote is just that, the quote without anything added or deleted. 8-)

I have agreed with Frank on a couple of matters but keep your eyes on ole Frank T to see if he will go along with your suggestion. You and I have around for awhile to see who is willing to work with who. Ole Frank ain't gonna' change just because you want to play fair. I know his views, I know where he is coming from and he does not negotiate. He is as rooted in his beliefs as I. He thinks it is his ball...

No, he isn't stupid, nor was any President in the history of this country.

I am curious though Frank, since Obama has never released any of his college grades nor the results of any testing, how do you know what his IQ is or was? 8-)

I wouldn’t expect Frank to change his position on abortion or same sex marriage so I’d start somewhere else after all I’m not changing my position on those topics either. How about we start with the tax code? Wouldn’t both sides maybe agree that our tax code needs work? Close loopholes, simplify the filing process and limit the size and scope of the IRS. Maybe on issues like this we can come together and put some heat on those folks we send to Washington and get something done.

oh, and you spelled apogee wrong...now I'm wondering who got the public education...

The quote didn't have the "and in" part. That was added by the media to help him out.
