I finally decided to get off the couch and go make an attempt at shooting the Milky Way this past Monday.
Wanting to evade the city lights I first went south of town. What was I thinking?!? Nothing but rice fields down there (for those who don't know, nor Cal grows massive amounts of rice). Rice fields = mosquitoes!
I then went east of town and found a quiet place to set up. I was surprised at how much city light I got from the distant cities to the south.
This is a 20 second exposure, ISO 1600, 24-70L@24, f/2.8 and in camera noise reduction.
....in a galaxy far far away....
Thi is cool. I have not being able due to LP. Great shot! Love it.
What lens? Camera?

I used my 5dMii and 24-70L@24mm.
Light pollution is a pain. I'm planning a late night trip up to Mt Lassen in the next few weeks. Hopefully I can get away from all that extra light.
As a side note, I first went to the rice fields to take the shot because I wanted to capture the Milky Way over the Sutter Buttes, the smallest mountain range in the world. I did not realize that I still got the Buttes in my shot until I brought the images up on my computer. The Sutter Buttes can be seen just below the lowest part of the Milky Way.

That's a very nice shot! I haven't tried shooting the Milky Way since I was a little kid. I had an Ansco Speedex, not much of a camera at the time, and I remember all my struggles to finally get a decent shot. Thanks for sharing.
JK didn't realize you to are located in Chico. You are right about the Mosquitoes. It is sometimes like a blood letting. Have you ever gone out to Barber Road? Off Meridian rd? Very dark. Would enjoy a cup of Joe and Stargaze sometime??

Nice shot. You will get pure darkness(research moon phase for your shoot date) at Lassen. Did you try a higher ISO? Have you ever tried a ND gradient filter upside down to help darken the light pollution? Just a thought. You will love Lassen. I hiked the Lassen Peak Trail and Bumpass Hell well after midnight on different days for my shots. Thanks for your comments too! Happy shooting!

I took a few at a higher ISO but didn't like them as much. But I will try again when I shoot the MW again. I did also try my ND gradient filter, but may have needed the higher ISO on that one. It was near the end of my shoot.
I do love Lassen. I go there every year. Just never shot anything at night ....... yet. Have you been to the northern part of the park, like by Cinder Cone and such? That's another great spot in Lassen Park. Here is a video I did several years ago of a trip I made up the Cinder Cone volcano.

I didn't get a chance to go to the northern part. It looks beautiful. I think I will go back soon before the snow arrives. I love those painted dunes. The Painted Hills of the John Day area here in Oregon are absolutely beautiful always but especially in the right light. Nice video.

I think the city lights in this, even though not intended to be included, make this a very interesting shot. It is quite nice.
The discussion of locations helps me put a few more destination markers on my GoTo map.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much. It's amazing what 20 seconds of exposure can produce.
