Borrow or rent the correct lens. With your lens extended you're probably at f5.6, so either your shutter speed will not be fast enough or your iso will be too high for a grainless image. I wouldn't use anything less than a 70-200 f2.8. Stun them with a quality shot that they can't do with their Costco Kit. Maybe you'll fall in love with this great telephoto lens and fork out the money to own it yourself.

Best suggestion yet

Tripod, monopod will slow you down. Don't be shy, get on the sideline if they will allow you to do so. Don't just shoot ( photograph ) him on the field, tell a story, on the field, on the sideline interacting with coach and other players. Have fun.

Barrow lens.

I think, that may well be the way to go, to borrow a lens, as I think you would probably not happy with the outcome using your lens.

What position does the son play?
Be ready for off the playing field, after the play, sideline shots. Great stuff there.
Monopod absolutely.
A faster lens would be nice and perhaps longer for some things, but I shot my son's high school years with a f2.8- 5.3 28mm-400mm (35mm equiv.) lens and did fine.

Not a one uses a tripod when on the field. They would be banned. They use a monopod to give added stability and quick movement.

If you can get in a good spot with a tripod, that will help. When you see those guys with the big, white lenses, they generally have them on tripods. Willy has good suggestions.

1/1000 may be a bit over kill. I don't have any experience shooting sports but I think 1/250 would be a good starting point.
A monopod may be a better choice over a tripod. Tripod legs will be a tripping hazard with lots of people around.

I started out with a hiking pole that has a 1/4-20 stud on top.
I think it was $20 at Cabella's?

I now have a Manfrotto 3245 [which has been replaced by the 334B].
