I take alot of pics in old, dirty buildings. I am careful with my camera and lenses at these spots but my shutter sometimes sticks and my most used lense is having trouble focussing. My main prob is my only local camera store is telling me he would have my camera 4-6 weeks. Last time I took anything to him he said 2 weeks and it was 4 and he said he couldnt find a prob. SORRY, my real question is. . .do you think it is the camera, the lense or is both having seperate issues?

You mentioned two things I don't want my camera to experience...Old Building....Dirty.....

To me that means dusty and that dust will settle in the delicate workings of your camera. A spec of dust to us could be a boulder to your camera equipment.

Clicked your website link to see if your problem photos were posted there, but the link does not work. Going to need some more specifics or at least samples to help you out.

Sorry, I knew I didnt put enough info in that message as soon as I sent it. D5000, nilkkor lense AF 17-55mm VR. I dont have the pics on my web, they are much to blurry for even an example. When my lense doesnt focus it will not focus at all. But this is not always the case and usually if I turn off and on the camera then it will work for awhile. When my shutter sticks i dont even get a pic. The shutter has been doing this for awhile but was mostly at the end of my battery life. Now it does it much more often and the lense has jus started not focussing properly since my last 3-4 photo shoots. Since you ask for it I am posting one of the pics but it is just a big blur!

DJS,

I don't believe that we can advise you definitively based on what you've told us. It could be both the lens and the camera (not likely, but possible) or either of them. I suggest that you may be able to isolate the problem if you can borrow a friend's rig. Taking his or her known working lens and put it on your camera and see what happens. If you get a good result, the probablility is that the problem is with your lens. A bad result points to the camera. Then do the reverse. Put your lens on their known-to-function camera and see what happens. This process will probably tell where the locus of the problem is and you can proceed from there. This process may even help you to diagnose the problem in the faulty component. The foregoing procedure assumes, of course, that your camera/lens combination is known to be a compatible one. Good luck.

For those asking about my Old Building pics. . .here's a few examples. I like to have people in my photos to give it a human element.

ohhh I don't have any words of wisdom besides taking it to a camera repair shop and seeing what they say?

I've you tried a different lens on the camera body? That at least will give you a hint if it's a lens issue or body issue.

The Nikon D5000 was recalled due to this issue. It's a power issue. This camera has not been on shelves in the US and Japan for a while now and it wasn't long after it got put on shelves that it was recalled and discontinued. It's a great camera as it does take after the D90 model but the power issue is going to cause some major issues the more you use it.

Good luck! I'd just get a new camera.

Buying this camera online is the only option...

I would be surprised if the dirt and dust in the building caused your problem. I could understand if there were clouds of dust in the air, but that looks OK. In a dusty situation, you could take precautions for a wet environment: bundle most of the camera in a plastic bag of some kind.

Contact Nikon and let them kow that you are aware of the problem and would like to get your camera fixed under the recall.

Of course, the suggestion of a new camera is a good one - D5100?

Thank you for the great advise. I wasnt aware my camera was recalled. I bought it used a few years back from a friend that never used it.

you can look it up using Google.com. Just go to google.com and search " Nikon D5000 Recall" you'll be swamped in reasons and answers to why.
