studying photography. Whatever I can get my hands on, and then putting it into practice, and then critically and objectively evaluating it. Then repeating it all over again until I get it right. I'll let you know when I get it right.

Thanks for the reply Sharpshooter. What I am suggesting is that for awhile we abandon " the competition" in favour of learning how to critique a photo. Once we have the tools or knowledge of what to look for in a photo, we will not only improve our own techniques but also be able to help the newbies who are entering the club to become more proficient image makers.
I happen to be competitive, but when the rules are vague how can one advance if one is unable to decode the secret handshake? Saying that one is not the "winner" does not help those who did not win overcome their weaknesses.

Nekon, in my opinion you are a great asset to this group. Thank you so much for sharing what you believe makes a good photographer. I'll be downloading you material and printing it as part of my set of resources.

Lots of good advice , some not so good. Not previously mentioned , talent . Some are born with it , most aren't .

As previously stated Practice, Practice, and more Practice. Now one neds to pay close attention with this practice as it just isn't shooting a 1000 frames it is practice with a purpose in mind and then looking at the images to you throw away very closely as that is where your trouble is.

Get two large pickle jars restaurant size. Empty pockets of change every night. Pennies in one and silver in the other. When they are full, buy the best glass out there.

Talent is real, but it's established that if you spend 10,000 hours in learning a skill, you will master it. Maybe not the level of mastery as a person with real talent (I'm thinking baseball or a musical instrument here) but good enough to be excellent and get great satisfaction or even a successful career.

10,000 hours is about 5 years of 40 hour weeks. As so many expert photographers recommend in this thread, practice, practice, practice.

GN, That is a great photo but then again I admire many of yours as they evoke emotion. I like to laugh and several of yours crack me up but funny but more challenging, clever. Love the couple of Christmas with kids photo's. Cheers

Follow your heart, and stick to your feeling. You need to understand your camera, but never forget that sometimes you just have to go for it.

Always when you are not using your camera, put it in auto..........because.......
Some of the most incredible shots ever taken, were not composed and planed. They just happen, and you don't have time to adjusted your camera.

Learn your camera and take lots of pictures. The more pictures you take, the more you will understand your camera and the better the outcome you will produce.....and the more likely you are to get an incredible photo.

Good luck, and please show some of your pictures.

Cheers,
Rachel
