What exactly is a "WalMart point and shoot"?

Hey go for it, sounds like your on the right track!
The Sony RX1 is definitely the best quality image maker out there, as long as you can be satisfied with a fixed 35mm equivalent lens and the cost of adding the EVF If your looking for a pocket-able camera, then the RX100II would be hard to beat, with new swivel screen and ability to add the same EVF.
Don't let those who are jealous kid You, there really is an appreciable difference in the image quality of these cameras, in their given categories.

Damn straight! I bought the Sony NEX-7 and most of the lenses that come with it but there's something about the RX 1 that screams LEICA!!!

And yes, I can live with a Carl Zeiss Sonar T* 35mm f2.0 lens, a full frame sensor and a Bionz chip with dial-in EV exposure, on the fly ISO adjustment and multiple autofocus modes along with the usual aperture, shutter speed, manual and auto exposure and in-camera HDR.

I am not going to join the debate about what is the best, just want to state my opinion of the RX-1 and RX-100

I do not have an RX-1 but do have the RX-100 and it is a great camera. After reading about the RX-1, although the full frame sensor is tempting, the RX-100 is a more versatile camera, with the built in 1.8 carl zeus zoom lens vs 2.0 lens on RX-1 I would prefer to have the zoom capability rather than the 35mm fixed lens. 700.00 vs 2500.00 + accessories are outrageously priced. Want a view finder? add 600.00 Want an external flash AND viewfinder? well you can't use both at the same time.

To me, the RX-1 is not 2000.00 to 3000.00 better than the RX-100 to justify the cost. I am sure the RX-1 is a very nice camera, I like the Sony line and have 3 cameras by Sony. Unless I win the lottery (which I don't play) I won't be buying one. All my Sony cameras take very good pics as long as I do everything right.

Yeah, I hear ya on the cost. My wallet is still bleeding. However, the RX 1 does have a zoom of sorts; 2-4 times magnification. Also, the built in flash is pretty good for its size. It also has a built-in macro feature that works well and the aperture control ring similar to the RX 100. I bought the EVF viewfinder because I can't stand framing shots with an LCD screen.

I agree 100%, just can't justify the very high price and very limited focal length of the RX-1 (or Leica for that matter). The IQ of the RX100 is quite good, as evidenced below.

Oh man...the X100S, while a fine camera in many respects, just didn't float my boat IQ wise...it was "almost" there....but it took too much effort to draw "L lens" quality out of it.

The search continues. I'm trying to decide on on of these three:

Sony RX1 (comes today from Adorama for a try out)

Sony RX100 M2

Sigma DP3.

All of which have great IQ.

If I could have had their IQ in a camera like the X100S I'd never buy another camera again.

I'll let you know how the RX1 goes in the next day or so. So far I'm pretty psyched.
here is a review and some quotes:

I have the RX100 (first version) and love it. The second version (M2) has two excellent additions:
1:-The versatile hot shoe which can be fitted with an EVF
2:-Rotable screen.

Although I have not held the M2 on my hands, these are the two features that I was missing in my RX100, but I am not ready to part with more money just two have the same camera with those two additional features. From my experience with the first version, I would not hesitate to recommend the M2 as your best choice.

I just purchased the X100S yesterday, arrives next week. I saw a good comparison of the Lecia M, X100S, and the RX1 that Steve Huff did. Yes, you certainly can see the difference between the Lecia and the X100S, but at $9K difference, you should. What was interesting is the RX1 looked as good as the M in most all regards.

I just do not like the viewfinder-less RX1 and I don't care to purchase their "add-on" and I simply don't care to spend that type of money on a camera that limits my options for lens.

Bottom line, the IQ is good under most circumstances and with the prices lining up at: $10,000 vs $2799 vs $1299, I think the X100S does darn good.

I currently have 2 Nikon D800e's that I use primarily for weddings. It is a great camera with excellent IQ. But, I wanted several things the X100S provides. X-Sync all the way to 1/4000, good viewfinder, fast focus with the feel of a rangefinder, quiet shutter, and a nice carry around camera that I will actually carry.

I am surprised that the X-Sync capability of this camera is not talked about much. FP/HSS just does not cut it. I will be able to sync a really Speedlight or my Einsteins all the way up to 1/4000 second at f/8...1/1000 to f/2. This is really a nice feature for outdoor portraits. Plus if need f/2 with full sync but 1/1000 does not cut it, then use the 3-stop ND filter.

I believe the X100S will make a nice camera for unobtrusive shots at receptions and other gatherings. (Small size and almost nonexistent shutter noise)

Fuji seems to be stuck on the x-trans sensor...you either love it or hate it. I will not know until I use it. But, from some of the comments I've read, it produces a very nice "grain" type look to the image.

I saw several photographs that Mark Kitaoka captured with the X100S using high sync speeds, they are absolutely beautiful, well executed and darn good IQ.

Regards,
Craig

As stated previously, I absolutely loved the RX100 to a point, and IQ wise the RX1 can't be beat, Leica or otherwise.
But I sold my RX100 and bought a Fuji X100s. What a terrific picture capturing device, probably the best on the market in my humble opinion. I just can't stand taking pictures with my arms outstretched, can't compose accurately and there is no intimacy between you and your subject, not to mention having the ability for a viewfinder with the inside boarder allowing you to see more than your image, enabling you to adjust your composition. This was the single biggest feature with owning a Leica camera. But today Leica is a joke. My original idea was to trade the RX100 for the RX100II and the optional EVF, but being able to compare the two with the hybrid in the X100s, I'm glad I didn't. The X100s makes breathtaking images, so does the RX100 for it's size. All that being said, if they put the RX1 sensor into a X100s body you would then truly have the perfect, fixed lens type camera!
