Puffins in Alaska

One of my wife's dreams was to see Puffins in the wild on our Alaska trip. Luckily, we had several encounters with the colorful little critters.

They are the most challenging birds in flight that I've ever shot. Someone described them as flying footballs. I'd say they are more like artillery shells.

I was very pleased with the performance of my D800's auto focus system. Used continuous 3-D mode for the BIFs.

You did great! I was not so lucky, I've since noticed theatre very few pics of them flying! Or even floating.

Thank you. The first one was taken by a rookery island in Sitka Sound. The last two were taken near a rookery island near Lake Clark National Park.

Most people haven't heard of Lake Clark NP. Here is what they are famous for:

She was probably 100 feet away, but she worked closer as she was feeding. I don't think there is anywhere in the world like it. We had bears within 20 ft. The guides are very strict about the photographers' behavior. We always stayed in a group.

I'll have to post some more photos on a new thread.
