I just finished downloading 1096(14gb )of images into lr5 over and above the 26,00 or so images imported the other day. I am using standard preview download. The import speed seems a little slow. Is there a setting control in lr5 that will speedup the import process?

I am not a LR fan, but I would guess that ingest speed is more a function of file size, processor, USB2/USB3/Firewire/Thunderbolt, the hard drive RPM, etc.
Captain why aren"t you a lightroom fan? And since you are not what editing program do you favor. I also have pse11 just in case i need to tweak some images from lightroom.

I have tried it and it just slows me down. I think for many, it is a perfect bit of software. I have so much invested in Photoshop - actions that I have written or purchased, plugins, etc - that I found myself ALWAYS going to do what I do in PS. And since LR cannot do layers, I find it useless.
I do not need the cataloging feature as I have my own labeling system that I used long before Lightroom.
That is not an indictment of LR - it just is a big speed bump in my workflow. I know it has gotten better, but I cannot do my detailed retouching in anything but Photoshop. LR detail tools are way too limiting...at least as of now.
And all this stuff about it being non-destructive is no big deal if you shoot raw as ALL raw processing is non-destructive.
Back when I did some sports stuff and had hundreds or thousands of images to correct, LR was OK. But for my portrait work, Bridge and Photoshop are perfect.
Maybe by Lightroom 7 it will work for me. I am not the only one who is not a LR fanboy, BTW.

The Import time is related to the size of the embedded preview: Minimal, Embedded & Sidecar, Standard, or 1:1. With Minimal being the quickest and 1:1 taking the longest. You choose the size of your previews in the File Handling panel on the right side of the Import window.
