New life for an old Leica...

My 3 year old son has taken up a keen interest in my photo outings since he was about 2. After starting him out with a "kids" camera, I've quickly realized that he was taking time and care to pick out subjects he was interested in, and actually framing the images. I've been on the craigslist hunt for a "real" camera for him for a while.

The first camera I picked up for him was a Canon elph. I thought the small size would work well for him, however while he's able to take some great pictures with it, I seem to spend more time wiping his fingerprints off of the lens than he spends shooting simply because it's actually TOO small for him and he wraps his fingers right onto the lens. I thought I'd try and find him something bigger that was still a fairly small investment (he is 3...), and was fairly durable.
Earlier this week I found this...

For those that don't recognize the red dot under his finger, it's a 2002 vintage Leica Digilux 1.

It's a bit comical that my 3 year old son's first real camera is now a Leica, but hey, the price was right, it's durable, and it's sure to start a few great conversations!

So here are a few more shots of him in action:

Here are some shots taken by my son with his new camera, unedited. Please remember before getting too critical, he's 3...

You are aware of course that he has a special gift. The picture of the cone flower is sensational. I hope you keep a few of the good ones to show him as he grows. Who knows how far this will go? Give him my best wishes. My congratulations to you for nurturing this unique interest.

Thank you.

I'm keeping them all, the great ones, and the "bad" ones. I see it the same as the first scribbles I made on paper that my Mom still has in a box somewhere :)
