Hummers are very challenging and rewarding to shoot, with a camera of course.
My best shots were taken on a tripod with the camera prefocused on an area where the birds normally feed. I the used a remote shutter release from in the house. I used as high SS as possible with an f-stop in the 11-16 range and AI servo to take several shots at a time. The results were well worth the energy and time taken to set it up.
Very nice shots by the way.

Thank you, these were taken with a D3100 and Sigma 150-500 prefocused appox 10 ft away mounted on tripod using remote release and firing multiple shots also.

Then you have it down and that's a good thing

My biggest challenge is the ruby throated hummers and the black heads being to dark compared to the rest of the body (going to try a small metal bell shaped drop light mounted above and point downward and see the results )

Great way to spend a rainy day. I like to see movement in the wings. Good shots.

I didn't mean any harmful criticism. I've got visitors at my feeder too and find them beautiful, amazing little guys. At least one is a Ruby - throated hummer and the green color is almost iridescent. Sometimes they wander into my garage, attracted to the fluoros I guess. They can scare you when they fly near and you don't see them at first but you hear this low pitched humming - like a huge wasp.
I've tried using flash to freeze the wing motion - not very successfully. I set the camera at say 1/500 and the flash to auto but for some reason the camera wants to reset itself to a lower speed and still get a bit of blur. I've attached my best shot so far but hoping to catch the little guy at a real flower some day!

I have the same situation with reduced shutter speed. Have done some research and found that the Canon EOS I have moves down to 200 when the flash is turned on.
