Understood, but as the years go by it is getting more difficult for me to see the VF as good as the LCD, plus I can take ground level shots without having to lay down and then take 10 minutes getting back up!!
I am sure I will get used to it and use it more than I think I will.
Thanks
I'm sold a Nikon D90 and got an SX50... couldn't be happier.
The day these "bridge" cameras surpass the DSLRs is coming!
Shoot the moon w/ SX50!
I have the Canon SX50 and love the features it has. If you have big hands it might be a problem, but what you may can do as has been suggested above. Best to pick one up in the store and see how it feels to you. I think you will be pleased with what it can do for the price (mine $389.00 at best buy) .

Nikon 510 does it all for me. Light weight ,yet feels substantial!

Recently got a SX50 but was having a little problem with fat fingering buttons when holding, when I didn't want to. Going through gear I had lying around found an old "L" bracket for an offset light attachment for a movie camera. It screws to the bottom of the sx50 and now my thumb is away from the buttons, but the buttons are full accessible. Like the camera.
I use a mini pod attached to tripods, that is one of those little 4" tripods that when folded up become a hand pod. Works great with the SX50.

Moon 50X, SX50, hand held.
How about the new Panasonic the Lumix DMC-FZ70, a 16.1MP compact superzoom with a 60x optical zoom. Spanning the equivalent of 20-1200mm it's the largest zoom lens available in a consumer compact

Well, when you look at the 'details', it is just a "little" bit wider at the wide end, but NO LONGER than the SX50!!! The 'extra' 10x zoom is meaningless for most of us.

I also have the SX50 and am very happy with it. The 50X zoom is amazing.

That's why I included the stats of 20-1200mm to indicate the zoom range not the end reach. Some would prefer to have a long reach zoom with the widest angle like I do. :)

Are you using one of these? How is IQ?
If you want a 50x zoom and easy controls with good photo quality try the Fuji sl1000.
Similar camera with 30 x zoom Fuji sl300.
These are excellent bridge cameras that do not get the ink of the Canon sx50.
Read the reviews on Amazon.
Hi Al McPhee
Before choosing a bridge camera, I suggest you look at the online reviews. Some of the experts prefer the Panasonic FZ200 to the Canon SX50. The FZ200 has a lens made to Leica specification. If you need to get to a focal length of 1000mm, Panasonic supply an extension tube and a 1.4 x converter. I have a 1.4 x converter and extension tube for my FZ100, and if I can get the shutter speed up to 1/100 second or better, then the "antishake" (Panasonic call it OIS which is short for Optical Image Stabilization) permits me to get sharp pictures handheld at 1000 mm. Moreover the FZ200 gives you f2.8 across the entire range.
Good luck & good shooting!
