Are there any uhh'ers from around Cass WVA? I would like to know what would be the best way to fly into that area, and if there are any motels in the area. From what I can see on their web site they don't show anyplace a single person could stay at the park. You help would be appreciated. I think the old stewm trains would be a fun photo op.
There is a lodge right in the state park. I would imagine there would be an airport near the Greenbriar but Roanoke is probably the nearest place with regular commercial flights.
I find that Chamber of Commences of population areas in close proximity and the entity it's self to be a great asset when I am planning an outing. They can be accessed by the web and they generally have toll free numbers. I have unlimited calling and I generally find someone they will chat me up. I am able to gain a more personal prospective.
Sounds like am interesting photo op. "JR"
I have been to Cass three times, it's that good. Never at the state park, my wife doesn't camp. Once we stayed at a resort about 10 miles southwest of town. It was a hugh log cabin with six more smaller cabins, it rocked. There is another smaller motel just out of town about six miles. Also another motel about 30 miles north. If you have the time be sure to take the ride that ends at night. That ride in an open air car is great. Also make the ride that goes all the way to the top, you can see forever. Lunches and entertainment were worth the price. Photo opps are endless, especially if you are into to trains like I am. (sundancecentral.org)
This all started in my head when I heard they had running Shay & Climax locomotives. It is just amazing that they gear drive & piston drive from a steam boiler. I am making plans to go there next June. I also want to do Williamsburg. It is one of the places I went to in a truck that I never got time to explore.
I notice that you are from the Tucson, AZ. I am in Las Vegas and I know of two gear type railroads in mid-California. In Jamestown, CA there is a Pacific Shay offerating on the Sierra Railroad. (Picture attached). Also on the Yosemite Valley and Sugar Pine RR. they have a Pacific Shay also. Check their website for times and availability. Additionally, The Roaring Camp and Big Trees RR. has a Climax in operation (Attached Pic). It seems that there are closer than Cass RR in West Virginia; however, the Cass RR does have all the types that you are interested in shooting.
I have shot a lot of trains in Ca.so if you need additional info about trains, maybe I can help you. Besides, I always like to help railfans find special locations to shoot trains. I have been doing this for over thirty-five years.
I just moved to "Lost Wages" so I still need to find some places here.

I think the #2 image is a Heisler engine.
Also, the Climax at Cass is being rebuilt and is currently in many, many pieces.

It's funny how some things that require exacting touch can be done by some people and not others. I could never hold anything that small and not break it. I really enjoy looking at the end result.
I believe you can rent one of the many old company homes that are on site, I don't know how much use they are in so it would be prudent to call ahead. Here are a couple of photos for you in the mean time.
