new to digital help please
hello all,i am new to the digital camera scene and pretty much know nothing.
i am needing a camera under 200.00 to take close-ups with
good detail.
i take close-ups of pocket knives, and little diecast matcbox cars.
i have a tri-pod and was wanting to know if there is a decent camera for under 200.00 that i can get for this purpose?
i would something simple to use for putting my pictures on
my collector forums....
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
jd

I really like my Canon Powershot for an inexpensive pocket camera that takes great quality pictures.
BigBear's suggestion is right on! You could spend a fortune for a bag full of equipment, but a nice little Canon Powershot 100 will do exactly what you're looking for, and about $169 new.
I'd probably stay away from flash, and maybe use a bright light that you may have around the house. Use a section of a bed-sheet between the light and your knife, or car, to "soften" the light so it's not so harsh. Just start shooting, and adjust the distance of your light till they come out lookin' good.
Cool idea, Jeffrey, hope it works out for you!
wow,2 replies already.
now i think i am gonna like this place.
i was looking at the cannon,and sony.but
i really didn't want to get home with the wrong one.
i think i'll get one first of week.
thanks for your helping of my decision.
jd
one more thing.
does the cannon have a good battery life?
is there anyway to just plug it into your wall wart
and use it like that?
say,if you are taking the pictures in living room, and
don't want to use up the batteries?
does it come with an ac adapter,or is that seperate at the
169.00 level?
it is important that i don't buy batteries every other day.
i really want a camera with a rechargable battery pack, instead of aa batteries.
i forgot to mention that.
hope the cannons have the battery packs?
jd
Canon isn't the only one, by any means, but it's a great starting point for shopping. Mainly, you want a camera that will let you get close enough for those small subjects. I've used a similar Canon to photograph pocket knives, and Zippo lighters, and have been pleased with the results.
The lighting is, however, rather important. Using the cloth (must be thin, and white) between the light and the subject helps to cut down on unwanted reflections and glare.
Take a few shots after you get set up and post them here, so we can see your progress. Good luck to you, jd!
Also, the cameras we're discussing use rechargeable batteries and they provide extremely long life.
thanks danilo,so you must be a collector of pocket
knives too?
i also have a pretty decent collection of zippos, but had to sell several awhile back because times are tuff right now.
i will certainly post my pictures here when i get my camera.
that rechargable battery pack sounds great too.
is there anything i need to know about keeping my pictures small enuff as to not take so long to download?
i do not want to clog up my forums with pictures the size
of texas if you know what i mean?
jd
Pictures can always be made smaller, but it's tuff to make 'em larger.
I picked up a Canon S3 IS that surprised me with the picture quality and the macro pictures it would grab. It even has a Super Macro mode that let you get about an inch from the subject. I spent about $75 on it on a CraigsList deal.

hello all,i am new to the digital camera scene and... (
show quote)
my second point and shoot was a kodak and it did an incredible job for shots of miniatures to sell on ebay, that said, most any namem brand point and shoot will fill the bill, look for a good OPTICAL Zoom, digital zoom will not get yiu where yiou wanna go
good luck
I have a Cannon Powershot, I paid $189 at Best Buy, it is a very nice camera I used for a backup for my Nikon D5100 simi-pro camera , I took about 50-60 pictures it has Micro settings which sounds like what you are looking for, I will sell it for $75.00 , I am 75 and do do much shooting any more because of my eyes-- if you want to send me your e-mail address to rebeil2@ij.net I will send you complete detail, it is complete in box, I was going to give to one of the grandkids for Christmas but they are all using their Phone Cameras
?Who are you referring to?
In looking over the replies I noted one thing missing. No matter which camera you buy be sure to set the white balance on the camera for the type of light you are using to illuminate the subject. As you are new to digital you probably haven't thought about it.
