Any one out there know where the best place to set up for a good photo of Mt St. Helens is. Will be traveling through during the day next month. Will have some time to devote to hiking. Thanks in advance.

Interesting you should ask as I was just there 5 days ago! I have 3 posts of photos. All taken from the Windy Ridge side. Check 'em out! Also here's a good website:

I was just there yesterday testing my new Oly E-PL5.
The further east you go, the better the view.
Here's a webcam you can check that shows you the view from the end of the road: http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/hdimages/volcanocamhd.jpg

Excellent. I flew over in a Cessna 2-seater in 1986. Too early for digital. It's amazing that it's been 33 years this past May.

I need to get back there, soon

I don't know how many remember Helen before she blew her to but she was a beautiful mountain.

RR, do you hike, or better yet bike?
Obviously both Windy Ridge and Johnston are good views.
My favorite shots are from the plains of Abraham which can have a lot of wild flowers at the right time of year. I get to it via the Ape Canyon Trail, but shorter from Windy Ridge. Both are strenuous hikes/rides, but particularly Ape Canyon. Ape C offers very good views of the Muddy River, mud/pyroclastic flow. The Ridge is better for Spirit Lake.
Have a great trip. SS

Click on my user name, then look at "number of topics created" and click on the link that says "list." They are numbers 3, 4 and 5 of the most recent. Thanks!

Going towards Windy Ridge, you can see Mt. Rainier, then Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood - all gorgeous mountains - from the same road! When you get to the first pullout for Mt. St. Helens, it makes the difference all the more stark. Very surreal feeling.

I liked the view from Johnson Ridge, but both locations are good. Also, a few years ago the wife and I took a helicopter tour of the crater, it was great.

Check Weather.com before you make the trip. Personally, I want a sunny day before I make the trip again. We were there several years ago, and the only day open for us at that time was cloudy. Interesting trip, but top half of the mountain was surrounded in clouds. Next time, I want blue skies for photos.
