Rumors

According to the trade industry it seems that Nikon is up to a big roll out of cameras and lenses in or about the tenth of January, availability of new stuff end of 2012.

Among the new stuff:
D4, the D3 is or will be out of production in the spring
Longer, brighter lenses
D400 should also come out.

Same rumors announce a drop of price across the board in Nikon cameras as the factories are coming back on line.

Note these are just rumors at this point but wholesaler are gearing up for a new inventory so... The real question is WHAT will really come out?

According to the Nikon Rumors website the D4 is coming out in January and the D800 (February release) is going to have a 36 MP sensor. Personally I think that 36MP is overkill unless you are going to do some huge enlargements but a whole lot of people will run out and buy it because they get all caught up in numbers, more does not always mean better. I am actually more interested in seeing what is going to come out in new dx lenses and the replacement for the current Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D VR.

I Agree Opus: Chopping up a perfectly good sensor with a good signal to noise ratio just to achieve high pix ratings is counter intuitive. As you say only BIG print people or those who crop to a small section of the photo can benifit from such a high mpix number. We ordinary folks, 99%ers, are limited by our out put devices and our eyes and mental memory of color.

Additionally, Now that we have reasonable printers, the modern mobile (younger people) do not want the burden of hang on the wall framed prints. The trend is small picture frame LED displays. For great events like weddings a DVD that plays on their HD-TV ocationally until they get to the point where they argue over who walks the dog they could not afford will do fine!! Yep, 36 MP is overkill when 5 makes a nice soon to be forgotten DVD.

If you stop to recall, rolls of 12 B&W 2.5x2.5 photos were relished and put in a scrap book and were the basis of remembrance. Now I chuckle and ocationally say, I only have 1200 left on this roll!

Oh! By the way OPUS, Happy Holodays! I grew up in Grand Blanc Michican when it was a democratic (small d, governed by elected officials) state, before it became ruled by decree by the govenor and his jack booted managers. Has your town been taken over yet by a State Manager?

The same rumor came out about the Sony Alpha 950 (A950) which is supposed to be released in 2012. The Sony is supposed to have 35mp and a host of new features, Sony was to delay production till they decided whether to use SLR or SLT technology. Who knows what the truth is, I guess we will find out in 2012 or 2013.

All this stuff was supposed to release last August, but then we had the natural catastrophes in Japan and Thailand. I'm personally waiting to see what the D400 specs will be. I'd really like ot have a D300, and may have one, depending upon the release of the D400. I know where there are a few D300s.

I do know they just released the 64-bit version of Capture NX2, which I have installed, and I take that as an indication that they are making the software ready for the new equipment that is coming.

From the Nikon WEB site:
32- and 64-bit versions are supported. However, under 64-bit versions, the software operates as a 32-bit application. ???????

The new 36MP sensor will probably be the same or very similar for the new Nikon and Sony cameras since Nikon uses the Sony CMOS backside illumination chip technology. This is the case for the 16MP sensor in the D7000 and D5100.

I would assume this new 36MP sensor would be a full frame senor, as 36MP in an Dx sensor size makes no sense. I wonder if Nikon will extend the pixel readout resolution from 14 to 16 or even 18 bits?

Being an electrical engineer in chip design I can tell you the technology involved in these sensors is amazing, and the cost too! It takes a massive amount of what we call NRE (Non Recurring Engineering) time and cost to develope a new chip even if it's an extension of a previous design.

Hat's off to Sony, Nikon & Canon for bringing amazing technology right to our fingertips!

I have many albums filled with those 2.5x2.5 B&W prints - a record of our family from the early 1950's until the age of digital (along with color slides). How carefully I had to choose how to expend each frame -- I'm so happy to have digital now, where I can shoot lavishly as I enjoy places or events & look for that perfect image in the stillness of my office later. I remember I used to miss some of the joy of family gatherings or vacations because I was busy picking the "right" picture opportunity. Now I can enjoy the "now" AND the memories later.

Yeah, i know, but that apparently, was a result of bad copying and pasting by their web master, and pertained to the Apple OSs.

As I say, I've installed the 64-bit version on my 64-bit system, and it is running in true 64-bit mode.
