Eveline: I quit about two months ago because of the attitude of a particular member.I found myself so infuriated by his unecessary, unjustified, and arrogant comments, that I was not learning anything. I am not a confrontational person, and I can take criticism with the best of them, but reading his rude and nasty replies to questions asked by others really got my goat.I felt so bad for the people he targeted.
Then today I decided I am coming back. There are so many wonderful, helpful people here, and I need to use the input and information they offer graciously.
And I made a wonderful friend here and we have exchanged photos and e-mails on a daily basis.
And anyway...I didn't want the nasty ones to win. I won't back down from anyone or anything,so here I am!!

Hello to you Annie. I have just read your message and I think you are quite correct to come back and enjoy the forum. On the face of it your circumstances are very similar to my own, I wonder if the individual is the same one who I can't agree with. Maybe I should do what you have done and start posting again. I'm sure I remember you when you were a regular contributor, your new found friend is very lucky having someone as kind and considerate as you as a friend. I'll bet he feels exactly the same way about you. I will try to ignore that JR1,
I have been told this many times by many people on here. Anyhow Annie, I look forward to seeing some of your work. Take care and all the best to you. Well done and always stick by your guns.

Hi Brnac,I am impressed somebody still remembers me.Yes, I am doing OK and hope you are well also.My last bear encounter was a week ago, it got a bit tense because we had to deal with a brown/grizzly sow with two cubs on the trail. The bears harassed us for about 15 minutes but it ended peacefuly, giving me more offbeat photos.Thank you for your past support Brnac, your comments were always appreciated.

I have made the difficult decision to leave UHH. Why? There are too many members who enjoy making negative comments to other members, or who spout off advice when they really know very little about the subject. I find those people unpleasant and a waste of time. I thought I would just leave, but I realized that wasn't fair to those who are helpful and positive. To those who help others so often, you have helped me learn new things about photography. I thank you. Good bye and good luck.

Eveline, I know exactly what you mean. I was an active member for a few months, I am not an expert
but I enjoyed the comradeship and made some wonderful friends who exchange emails with me daily.
Both women and men are in this group and I love all of them, they are real, understanding, true friends
We had some some super, slapstick fun, with many joining in. One of the posts received over 6,000
answers, all comical and it was a hoot. Photographs were submitted and edited on PS and other software and it really was quite an excellent affair, you must agree 6,000 is a lot of happy messages. I do not post to the forum now. I just lurk the background to see if anything interests me. Maybe you should name and shame the people who have upset you and treated you to make you want to leave. The reason I lurk and do not send messages is solely because of "JR1", he has been called arrogant, ignorant, rude and lots of other things. I just cannot stand how he treats people so inferior, as if he is Lord and Master. I do not give a damn how clever he is, or what he knows or professes to know. There is no need to be short, rude and to ridicule people. I know for a fact that others have left this forum because of the way "JR1" answers people. There is no excuse for his type of behaviour and lately he has been accused of being the forum policeman, who is he to lecture people he doesn't even know, about etiquette and manners. It is supposed to be an informal friendly forum, not some where you have to beg and grovel for an answer to a photography question. It appears to me, searching back that anyone who has been helped always does leave a thank you.
I don't know if this will be allowed on the forum, I really don't see why not, so here goes.

I have been keeping an eye on this post and I need to set the record straight. I personally have never been attacked or criticized on UHH. If I received feedback, it was helpful and I was grateful for the input. I also had no intention of singling any particular member of the forum. There's more than one guilty party, so please stop attacking specific individuals.

That was not my purpose in wanting to leave the forum. To clarify, I am very disappointed in the negative comments, and attacks on others that I have seen. (For example, JR1 and Annie Girl have been attacked relentlessly.) I have noticed some comments that were derogatory to other nationalities, (French speaking) or religions (Christians and those who mention God in their posts). As a result, I just feel that my reading the posts is not a productive use of my time. Maybe it's time for a change - no more personal attacks, or nasty comments. Just constructive criticism, helpful advice and fun are required. Wouldn't UHH be a better forum? In fact, the world would be a better place if we could use the same rules towards everyone.

Eveline - looking at your posts, I'm not 100% on the reasons for your announced departure. I will suggest to you and to everyone following this post to consider the following usage ideas:

1. Don't subscribe to chit-chat unless you've got the stomach for it (I don't...)

2. Update your profile so that you don't receive email notifications for new replies to a topic (if you comment even "some", your inbox will explode)

3. Recognize (as suggested by several already) the vast differences in relative depth of experience and age and background and physical location of active users of this forum means some amount of misunderstanding will occur as we try to find a common understanding (via Q&A) without the visual cues that live 1-on-1 interaction provides.

4. Recognize too, if it really is a waste of your time, you are making the correct and proper decision and our misgivings to the contrary, you are making the right decision for you.

Although mostly email acquaintances, I've made several friends via this site and have recently met one member in person.

Eveline, as I wrote in my last post, it would be a shame if you left this forum. You may have much to learn, but it might surprise you to know that even novices have much to teach.

Having said that, I think you ought to reread some of the threads on the Main Discussion portion of this forum. If you think that the excuses you have given are proper and justified, then you have missed a great deal - and perhaps you will be happier elsewhere. I would like you to stay, but, if you do so, it needs to be with the understanding that there are some fine people on this forum who happen to have differences of opinion. There are also some people who have a good deal of expertise, but are lacking in social discipline.

I hope you make the right decision. Your choice may indeed sway others who would also be assets to this group.

Keep in mind, that you cannot see facial expressions and body language in the written word and that not everyone possesses the gift of clearly writing down what they mean.
That sometimes make messages come across as unfeeling, hard, rude, etc., when they often are short and to the point. I've been accused of being rude myself, when I left a very short message simply because I had the answer to a question but not the time to go into some detail.

Exactly, I've done this. I'm on my pad instead of the laptop and I only have time (or skills) to get out a short sentence without going crazy with spell check.

Also, we live in a society where we are wounded over the slightest perceived insult....we have such thin skin it's amazing our internal organs stay inside us!

Also, just in case you wanted to know...UHH is far from the worst at this...this behavior (or perceived behavior) exists BECAUSE of the medium; the anonymous internet box....

Good luck wherever you go...if you find a good photo forum with knowledgeable people where everyone is very friendly and nobody answers when they don't actually KNOW the answer then you get back here fast and let us know where it is! We'd like go their also!

Please don't leave, Eveline. Stay here and help make this the kind of forum you envisioned when you joined. Thank you.

+1.

I often become negative. I hope I am not a component
of your decision to leave.

For (recent) example, when someone is ignorant enough to misquote Bernoullis theorem of 1738 and call it
the "Laws of aerodynamics" in an attempt to contradict,
I'm likely to become negative. I'm sorry.

Despite that, I am a man that is compelled by my nature to help others... and be positive.

Please stay.
