I recently bought a used Nikon 5000 and began the endeavor of trying to figure out the users guide with some limited success.
And then I came across Ken Rockwell's Nikon d5000 user's guide. I got more use info out of that in 1 hour than I have been able to dig out of the Nikon user's manual and put in a way to make it more understandable to a novice like me.

Yes, it is nice when someone breaks it down like that.

Rockwell gets knocked around a lot. Much of his stuff is very good though. Glad you found a tutorial that works for you. Keep plugging and it will all begin to fall in place. ;)

I inherited a Nikon d5000 but noticed the photos seem to have a greenish tint on it. How do your photos look? I can post some pics when I return home and we can compare. Good luck...

I did the same thing with an old D40 that my youngest son gave me when he bought his D200 several years ago. Ken makes some things so easy to understand! I also was amazed at how much I learned from reading another book earlier this year - Understanding Exposure, by Bryan Petersen. Get a copy. Now. You will learn SO MUCH, and most everything starts making sense when you understand what goes into setting your camera on Manual and dial in the perfect exposure ...

Sounds like your WB might be set manually. If so, try AWB for now.

So nice to hear this. Congrats on the new camera and finding Ken Rockwell's user guide. He gets such a bad rap from some of our members but I find that he's honest, concise and very readable. I always go to him for information, first, then I move to other info sites.

So, you are where ALL of us have been. Read! Ask questions! Experiment! Evaluate each photo to determine if there was anything you would/should have done differently. Then, go take more photos.

Repeat!
