I have made the difficult decision to leave UHH. Why? There are too many members who enjoy making negative comments to other members, or who spout off advice when they really know very little about the subject. I find those people unpleasant and a waste of time. I thought I would just leave, but I realized that wasn't fair to those who are helpful and positive. To those who help others so often, you have helped me learn new things about photography. I thank you. Good bye and good luck.

Sorry to see you go. As you stated there are those who are helpful and positive who have helped you to learn and grow as a photographer. You should consider staying, take the good and ignore the others. ;)
I echo your sentiments. Lately, I am judicious in which comments I open. Unfortunately, Topic Subject lines are often misleading. Nonetheless, I am wasting less time today because I am becoming familiar with members who seem predisposed to negativity and animosity. They are simply mean-natured. Fortunately for all of us, many posts are well-articulated and intellectually stimulating. One notable exception is "Sarge". He is off the chart likable and entertaining

99% are helpful and give good advice.Got a lot of good info on any questions I had about cameras and lenses etc. There is always a few that are negative in any group or organization but I just ignore their comments.
Eveline, always good to know why members leave. I wish you well in your photographic pursuits.
And if along the way I contributed in any way some of that negativity, please accept my apologies.
Best of luck. SS.

I agree. Maybe we should totally ignore those negative people - don't answer them - and maybe they will find another venue to rant in. As a teacher (I have had other jobs/businesses before becoming a teacher in a NY City HS) you learn that there are different types of intelligence. Maybe someone cannot comprehend the instructions from the manual as they are not always clear and asks for help - people should not get on their case. Also, when people ask for peoples advice on gear does not imply they did not read review, but want to hear from people that have had first hand knowledge of the product as opposed to those that might have be written (pro or con) by people who were paid to write the reviews.
We need more people like you and less of the negative people on this forum.

Keep in mind, that you cannot see facial expressions and body language in the written word and that not everyone possesses the gift of clearly writing down what they mean.
That sometimes make messages come across as unfeeling, hard, rude, etc., when they often are short and to the point. I've been accused of being rude myself, when I left a very short message simply because I had the answer to a question but not the time to go into some detail.

Oh well, now to think which Sarge?
Ole Sarge - Sarge69 - Sarge - Sarge McQuire ??? Who gets the vote ?
Sarge69
I've been here for a while now, have learned more than any school could think of teaching me. I have seen many negative people come and go. I have learned to just ignore them, keep learning and sharing. I have designed and belonged to many different types of forums over the years and will not let a small % discourage me on this forum.
When I joined this forum I was shooting with a bridge camera, upgraded to a T2i and now shoot with a 60D. This would never have happened if it were not for the good people here and there are many. Try and ignore the negative, just be the bigger person, learn and enjoy.

I am sorry if I am one of them. I know I say some unkind words to folks who instead of giving people help is to tell them not to attempt what they ask about. I also get upset with those who think that their way of doing things (RAW = JPEG - using manual only etc.) and get upset when others do things other ways. And their are some of us old timers that banter back in forth in a way that is fun for us but may look bad to someone just getting on the blog. I hope you will reconsider. - Dave
I have observed that the really bad ones leave in about 30 days. If we ignore them they get bored and go away.

Eveline, I urge you to stay. By leaving, the negative members win. We all know who they are (and most can be avoided by staying out of the chit-chat section). Stick around and continue being an element of class in this otherwise messy melting pot of attitude :)
Constructive criticism and negativity can sometimes be hard to tell apart. Part of our purpose as Hog members is to hear other people's comments regarding our photos so we can all grow in the skill of taking excellent images. However, there always are a few bad apples in our mix. They usually fall away.
