I'm not a birder; however,I was photographing at the beach this morning and noted this bird, which I've not seen before. Does anyone know what it is. Location: Asilomar Beach, California Central Coast.

A good example of survival of the fittest/adaptation! A very nice picture.

Thanks. I am using a new Sigma 120-400mm and was amazed at the detail myself. This one was shot with a Sigma 70-200 a few weeks ago in Alaska. I may need to start birding :-)

Well, you are certainly doing a great job of it. I do take pics of Golden Finches at the feeder and what ever else comes around in my yard. I just have a Fugifilm point and shoot camera. Nothing special but at least I can delete bad shots.;-D) My favorite that I enjoy doing is macro of the flowers I grow. Keep up the good work. I love seeing the birds and yours are fantastic. Especially this Eagle!!

In many ways your bird likes like a starling. They have a lot of sparkles in their feathers and a large vocabulary. However, I am not familiar with California birds.

Thanks, Blue Sky.

I googled Starling and found this image

Looks like a match.

Not a Startling - beak color is wrong and the original picture the bird looks much larger than a Starling

Nice shot, but it appears to be softened. I shot this one about 4 months ago at the World Bird Sanctuary in St Louis, MO. I was using a Nikon D80 with 70-300 VR Zoom.

Your bird looks to me as though it is a juvenile european starling (sturnus vulgaris) I could be wrong but it has the right markings. Beautiful shot, he is looking right at you!

It is probably a fairly young starling starting to show it's winter coloring. Their beaks get darker and the flecks on their chests become more pronounced as the season progresses.
