Has anyone trimmed all their camera gear down to a P&S as their #1 go-to camera? Have you gotten rid of all of the cameras and lenses, and now resort to the simpler life of ONE, one piece, camera?
This thought occurs to me often, but haven't had the guts to flip the switch yet. I currently have 4 cameras.
DSLR + 3 lenses: 15-85, 50 1.8, 70-200 f4
SX50 HS
SX230 (14X zoom..pocket size)
XZ-1 (4X zoom w/ 1.8 aperture..pocket size)
If I would really spend the time and make an effort to get the very most that I could from a single camera, I think I could do it.
But I'd like to hear if any of you have wrestled (successfully or unsuccessfully) with such thoughts and/or actions.

Am 83 yrs. young, have an assortment of L glass for a Canon 5D Mk II, way too heavy for a just completed trip to Rome, Sicily, Portugal. Bought a HS50SX Canon just 5 days before leaving. Learned the basics, and learned more along the way. Rained for 5 0r 6 days, the MkII would have stayed in the hotel, but the little HS50 stayed with me continuously. Came back with over 1700 shots some not so good, but the majority are keepers. Shot RAW and JPEG Fine, all went on a 32 Gig card, no flash permitted, no pictures at all in the Cistine Chapel, guards walking around and would take cameras if found shooting and take the memory card. Leaving for France in a couple months and nothing but the HS50 in carry on. Many shots taken from moving bus, raised ISO, and shot at 1/2000 with very good results. Check out pics by sending pm. So far, 5 others have acquired this little jewel from my experience. I am not a Pro, but like shooting.

I'm old and suffer from essential tremor, which is pretty common I'm told among the not so young. My essential camera is now the Lumix FZ200 with a monopod or tripod. The camera is great but the instruction book leaves much to be desired. If you have this camera there are many excellent tutorials on Youtube. Scroll down the page for explanations with demonstrations.
Whatever your P&S, have fun.

Hi BobT, My main camera is an Olympus E-PL1, but more and more I am using my P&S (Lumix TZ20) as a main camera the shots it takes are just as good if not better. My P&S is much more convenient to use in towns and other busy places, the main con is there is no viewfinder.
I hope this helps you.

Just back from a 5 week motor trip west.Took both a P&S and a DSLR.The little P&S turned in some fine pics, but the big camera really did its number. Now having a couple of large canvass prints made that would not have been possible with the P&S.

If "everybody" (well it seems quite a few) are going to sell their DSLRs and downsize, I wonder who's going to buy them?

I went with pen camera and never regretted it. I think it takes great pictures and it is a lot easier to carry around

I'm using a Canon Powershot G15 now, with f/1.8 aperture. My two primary criteria were that the P&S had to have a viewfinder and had to save files in RAW format. The Canon G series does that, and additionally has controls that are generally more like those on a DSLR than on other P&S's.

I have four Nikon bodies but take most of my photos with my Panasonic ZS20. It is the only camera that I would replace.

In fact, I upgraded from the Panasonic TZ3, giving the latter to my wife after she dropped it at the Grand Canyon last year. At the Grand Canyon not into it. It had one small scratch but that was a great excuse and she could not say "No!"

BobT -- I did it! Got too old, camera gear got too heavy unless there was a tree or a tripod to lean on. I reluctantly sold off the 5D and various lenses -- bought a SX50 HS, which you already have. It does all I really want to do anymore. Can't say I'm really happy with it because of all the crap they build into them, but I am amazed at the quality of the photos. Larger, heavier DSLR cameras and lenses easier to use for me but I'm gonna live through it. Carry it with me wherever I go -- still stick the lens cap in my pocket and have yet had to worry about lint, dust or dirt getting on the lens from this practice. :-)

I'm with you. I still have my SLR's and equipment, but only use the SX50 now. Less stressful at my age and to me just as good.

If I HAD TO I could live with a Canon G 15, have a G7, still get great shots of my grand kids and everything else, but I like the DSLR,
Bob.

Bob,
after years of film cameras, I went digital with an Olympus Camedia P&S It had the longest zoom I could find 8x optical...I upgraded 2 more times with Olympus point and shoots. Carried the last one everywhere and it took great images and when set to highest quality I was able to print way big 24x36 with great quality.

Thing is I eventually felt I needed more...but did not like the weight of the big DSLRS. Then I heard about the Olympus OM-D It fits in my purse and i have room for an extra lens.
I cant just zoom back and forth so easily any more with the full range of the P&S..but I have gotten really good at making quick lens changes. Love this cam
