Re-installing Panasonic lens firmware....help!

I was installing the new firmware for my Panasonic 45-175 lens on my Olympus OM-D when the computer crashed.

Now the camera will not recognise the lens at all, or the Olympus firmware updater recognise the lens is attached to the camera!

How can or do I go about getting the firmware re-installed in the lens?

RJM, do you have access to another computer you could use? From your question, it appears the crash did not affect the OMD. If that's true, you are most fortunate. Do your other lenses work with the camera? Did you use the Oly updater for the Panasonic lens? i would suggest you find another computer, load the updater, and give it another try. Good luck!

I was indeed using the Olympus updater with the Panasonic lens on my OM-D.

The camera and all the other lenses are working fine.

However, the camera does not recognise the 45-175 lens when it is attached. The Olympus updater program also does not recognise the lens.

At the moment, I think it needs someone with a Panasonic camera to attach the lens with the downloaded lens firmware to an SD card, and update it that way.

From reading about it, it seems that Panasonic users update their kit this way.

You might check with Olympus to see what they say about supporting and updating Panasonic accessories. Do you have a local dealer who carries Panny equipment?

That is the problem when you buy outside the Nikon-Canon-Sony triumvirate. It takes time to get answers. Again, good luck.

Your experience has cautioned me about using Panny lenses with my OMD.

Don't worry about using Panasonic lenses with Olympus equipment.

I have a mixture of Olympus and Panasonic lenses and they are all excellent. The Panasonic 20mm F1.7 is superb on the OM-D.

It was all my fault that I have the problem........just got to sort it out! :(

You'd think they would have a fail-safe designed in there. Power can fail at any time, and computer crashes aren't uncommon. I'd contact Panasonic. They should be able to get your lens so the camera can use it.

I did contact Panasonic and they gave me the details of a company which want me to send off the camera and lens.

If they knew what they were doing they'd only need the lens!

It's just a firmware update of the lens and nothing to do with the camera.

It seems Panasonic do their updates differently....and therefore only a Panasonic camera will be applicable!

Do you mean a Panny camera is required to do an update on your Panny lens? You can't do it with your OMD? If so, that is what I meant about being leery of using a Panny lens.

yes, you can NORMALLY do it on your Olympus camera but I cocked up and wiped the firmware off the Panny lens!

Now my Olympus camera and update software won't recognise the lens.

Looks like I need a Panny Camera to sort it out!

They're both good systems. I've always had Panny cameras up until my OM-D which I'm more than pleased with.

Did you ever think that maybe our lives are too dependent on software? :D

Me too. Hardly use my Nikon D7000 anymore, though I do think it is still better for sports.

Just curious... how did you wipe the firmware off your Panny lens?

When I took word processing at a local community college back in the 80s, the instructor told me I would need to change from thinking mechanically - as with a typewriter - to thinking electronically with the computer. The same is true with the transition from film to digital. Digital requires a dependence on software and such. It's just the way it is.

Don't know why I didn't think to ask this already... Are you familiar with the mu43 forum? If not, join up and ask about your issue. My guess is you will get a good answer.
