Did you see the interview of Meryl Streep on 60 Minutes this week? I enjoyed it -- and enjoyed seeing the lighting set-up used for those images made on the outside stage.

"available light"

It's amazing....when we look at an interview on TV, it looks like the subject sitting in a chair with the camera in front of them ! The top picture shows that much more time, equipment, and thought goes into the shot underneath !! Nice post ! Very enlightening !

I have seen this type of set up, its amazing the time and work that goes into it, and alot of times the actor will tell them the "look" they want to display for the audience, and will get very bossy when a certain lighting is showing to many "life" lines on the face LOL!

Also mucho $$ and more expertise than most of us will have.
I would like to know the general light temperature of this setup. Maybe someone like Nikonian can answer that ponder.

I also noticed, very well done. Hollywood lighting is incredible and the best part is it looks natural.

It is not unusual for these crews to spend a half day setting up lighting. I've been on a '48 Hours' set and it is a lighting directors dream-pulling out all the subtle tricks to create interest. Color and focus is critical, they keep the lamps and books far in the background so DOF keeps them soft and non-competing. Notice how backgrounds tend to be 'warm' colors? Dress is important for the talent too--solid pastels are recommended, not whites, reds, or fine print fabrics. These crews use Chimeras with eggcrates to control DOF. The goal of good lighting is to make it look 'not lit,' making you think it is natural.

I work with a video provider a few times a year and they custom white balance each time. So whatever the color temp is there, they balance for the specific situation.
