Question for English People
I watch a lot of English TV, and I recently began watching a "new" series from 2011 - DCI Banks. I was wondering what the general opinion is of that show. I find it similar to other English cop shows, but it falls short. It seems to be trying to copy the established, successful series, but doesn't quite make it. I find it awkward, with plot holes and long, silent scenes that serve no purpose. Still, I'll continue to watch it. It took me a couple of minutes to recognize Stephen Tompkinson from Ballykissangel.
No never wached it we prefer the American shows, you should try them Jerry, Grimm, Bones, warehouse 13, continuum thats about it for me.
I really liked Fawlty Towers, To the Manor Born, and Mr. Bean, to name a few... a refreshing shift from the uberlaughtracked, overdone stuff that characterizes some of our so-called comedy.

Fawlty is a winner, in addition to many others. Mr. Bean and Benny Hill never caught my interest.

You must see this on PBS: Wallander or Walander, great detective series. Inspector Louis (very good!). We have seen most of this and love the English series. Also, do not discount "Sherlock".
Being English and an ex cop, I'd give Banks about a 7 out of 10.
Like a lot of stuff now, it's being made for the 'world' market and as that means mainly American T.V. it tends to suffer because of it being neither one thing or the other. I much preferred Morse, Lewis or the more light hearted Frost as detective stories as they did appear to be more English in their portrayal of British Policing. Sadly all three have now finished production. My main gripe both with the American series we see over here and the current British series are the number of women actresses (not actors- they are men) who now seem to dominate every programme. Also since when did the coroners officers leave the mortuary and start solving crimes through out the country. Body of Proof and Silent Witness
to name but two.

IMHO DCI Banks is not a patch on Morse, Frost, or Lewis which are our favourite cop shows. Barnaby, Wyecliffe and Taggart are also good.
Do`nt know if you can get any of these on your side of the Pond.
Yes I'd forgotten Taggart and Barnaby, both also good 'British' programmes. You've got to admire the Taggart Team still going decades after Mark MacManus died, and still producing entertaining watchable TV.
They are all good when you see them the first time, But we keep getting repeats. It causes more hassle in our house because the wife wants me to record them and watch the programmes as well then she falls asleep half way through. Oh, don't forget Midsomer Murders series one and two.
Trouble is most of the new programmes are being made for Sky. BBC and ITV are now all game shows or other rubbish.
I don't watch those kind of shows, so although I'm english I can't help.

You mean you don't like The Voice, Britain's got talent, Big Brother, I'm a celeb get me out of hear and all those other intellectually stimulating offerings from ITV and BBC? (That for the benefit of our American readers was written tongue in cheek - they are all an insult to entertainment!)

All of the TV I watch is English TV 'cause my Spanish is not that good (yes, I do know why they don't send donkeys to school). Sorry! I do enjoy British TV programs too, and one of the better places to see them is on ACORN TV. If you have the chance take a look at "Mid Summer Murders" GREAT Britt TV! Others include, "The Vicar of Dibley", "Alo, Alo", and "Blackadder" to name just a few.
Cheers :-P
Way too many detective programmes. They're a bit like shopping centres. When you've seen one, you've seen a mall.
