Hello all, I have a question.I upgraded to lightroom 5 and all my photos that I edited in version 4.4 transfered over without my previous edits applied. Has anyone had this happen? I have probably done something wrong but can't find a solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The advantage of LR is that your original images are untouched. When you "edit" an image, the edit steps are stored in the Lightroom file and applied to the original, in RAM, when you call it up in LR. If you opened that original in Irfanview, it would not have any of your LR changes.

I have not done this but I'm sure there's a way to import your LR4 file into LR5. RTFM.

I had no problems at all. Maybe it is because I shoot raw and when I download to my Mac I convert to dng?

I am using LR 5 through CC and when I upgraded I was given options to upgrade with or with out edits. Everything went smooth. My catalog goes way back and has 102000 photos so it took about 45 minutes to do. That might be because my catalog is spread out over several external drives, depending on he age of the photos.

My main working files are on a 2 TB external drive that's also where I keep my catalog file so I can attach he hard drive to my laptop when I travel.

LR 5 is supposed to let you edit any photo in your catalog even if the actual photo is on a non connected drive and its supposed to sync up when recounted. I haven't tried this feature yet.

I really like he speed improvements in LR 5.

It depends on how you did the upgrade. If you answered the questions wrong when upgrading this might have affected the upgrade. If you removed the older version of LR first, this may have caused the problem. If you still have the old version on your computer, you should try reinstalling the new LR5 but answer the questions correctly. If you removed the old LR and didn't save a copy of the catalog, you are screwed; all of your edits will be gone unless you had LR4 preferences set to create sidecar files. I doubt this was the case since you'd see all the edits now if you had done this in the first place.

If you still have LR4 on your computer and you want to try reinstalling the new LR5 I suggest you deactivate LR5 first, then uninstall LR5, reboot your computer, reinstall LR5 and be sure to follow the prompts so that LR5 finds LR4's catalog and keeps your changes.

No, Edit>Catalog Settings>Metadata>check "Automatically write changes to XMP"

Keep in mind, it's still always a good idea to backup the catalog, found near these settings, and then copy that catalog to another drive for safekeeping. This way if someone swipes your computer or you have a house fire, you can restore the catalog on the new computer. You should also backup all your images but that should go without saying.

Unless you deleted it you probably still have your Lightroom 4 catalog in the same folder as the newly created Lightroom 5 catalog.

Select File: Open Catalog.

You should be in the folder where your Lightroom 5 Catalog is. See if there is a file called Lightroom 4 Catalog there as well, and if so select it and select open.

Lightroom 5 will present a dialog box and ask you to give permission to relaunch LR. Click on Relaunch.

LR will open a new dialog box and ask if you want to upgrade the catalog again. Select Upgrade Again.

If this does not resolve your issue, get back to us with any specific messages you get.

Thanks for all your help. I uninstalled LR5. That didn't work. When I answerd all the update questions I didn't see anything different than the first time. All my pics are there but previous changes are not. I am a amature photographer and its not a huge issue, but pros who have hundreds pics who want to reprint some duplicates I could see this as a problem.

Ok. I had to start over. I uninstalled LR5 and all the catalogs that were created for LR5. I didn't do any changes LR4. I left it on my computer when I did the upgrade. The mistake I made was I imported all my photos from the hard drive directly to LR5 and it created a new catalog so all my previous edits were not there. After I installed LR5 for the 3rd time, I went into file, chose import from another catalog,I found the LR4 folder and used that. All my pics transfered over with my previous edits as I had wanted from the start.
I don,t know if this was the best way to get all info from LR4 to LR5 but so far it looks good. I want to thank you all for your help. Without it I would have not figured it out this fast. I have learned a lot from this forum and hope I can help in the future. :)
