A little gift from God

Friday of last week was a road trip/photo-excursion day for me. I had an idea in my head of where I wanted to go, what I wanted to see, and pretty much when I should be at those various places along the way. I spent much longer at each place than expected and added unexpected stops as well. I finally arrived at my last photo op of the day, the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse at the mouth of the Columbia River on the Washington side. I got my shots from across the small bay, and then decided to drive out the jetty for a little different angle.

As I turned left from the parking lot, something caught my eye, it was a young buck deer, barely starting a two point rack that was still covered in velvet. Just standing near the road watching me.

I quickly pulled to the opposite shoulder and removed my camera from the tripod, and changed the lens, hoping all the while that I wouldn't turn back around to find him gone. After all the anxious preparation, I looked out my driver side window and there he stood no more than 20 feet away. I was so excited that I didn't really pay enough attention to the camera settings and fired away, capturing two or three nice frames. I thanked him for waiting for me. I put the car in gear and began slowly rolling forward, when God rewarded my patients with slow traffic and other unexpected delays that got me here hours later than I had planned. Just a few feet further ahead the scene changed dramatically and I captured the view below.

As a lighthouse aficionado as well as a lover of wildlife, I honestly thanked God for this gift of a perhaps once in a lifetime shot. Unfortunately, he was so close and my aperture so wide the lighthouse is not in focus, but I still love the shot.

Wow, the magic light and the perfect pose--are you sure you'd want the lighthouse in focus? As captured, there's no wondering which is the main attraction!
