If you just "go manual" without not knowing what you're doing, you'll ruin more pictures than not.

Nat, Geesman is right. Learn to use your camera 1st. D'ont start in the middle. And when you do go manual make sure you know where that green square is. I have saved many shots like that. i.e. jump out of the car, put on auto and grab that shot. If it's still there them figure out how to make it better on some other setting.
I use manual focus mostly when in "live view" on magnification, very good for that. Learn AV and TV 1st then worry about manual. Don't worry, manual settings do not make you a pro and you will have plenty of time to get there.

You're right, SharpShooter. I'm trying to progess too fast. Need to slow down and concentrate on the basics.

Nat here is a link for the 7D manual. I know I can't read that tiny print in the one that came with the camera...

Just to make sure it's clear, because no one has mentioned it. You change the camera to Manual control for exposure is on the camera. The switch to choose between autofocus and manual focus is on the lens. So, yes, they are entirely different issues.

This may refer to any camera, but mine is a 7D. If I put the camera on manual mode, should I also set the lens to manual focus, and vice versa? I have a DVD that came with my camera. I will sit down with that, but I thought I would throw this out to y'all anyway. Things sometimes take a long time to imprint on my aging brain cells, so everyone....bring it on...something is bound to click sooner or later! Thanks in advance! Nat

I advise all emerging shooters, young and new shooters to get a book like Digital Photography for Dummies ( no disrespect intended) I have a copy at my work place and one at home, GREAT reference and a wonderful learning tool for the young enthisiast as well as a great reference for the well seasoned shooters, web forums are a wonderful place to get your feet wet and your ears dry.
I find myself looking for info in well dog eared old photo magazines as well.
Good luck and have fun

Swamp Gator is spot on, I shoot with the 7D and its the same with both my Canon and Tamron glass. I love my 7D, do your self a favor if your going to be doing allot of shooting with it get a Blackrapid strap for it. I was doing some 5 & 6hr shoots and my neck would be killing me after them. But since I've gotten my RS-7 sling its a world of difference, I had several friends tell me to get one for a while now but had other things on my list I wanted more. Big mistake knowing what I know now, it would have been the second purchase after buying the body that is....lol. Happy shooting!

I have never heard of that strap but I will certainly look into it. I agree that the combination of heavy camera and heavy lenses is a real problem. Thank you very much!
