Maureen, buy a set of Dental picks, a head lamp and a good magnifier (can be had at Harbor Freight for short money). The picks come in different shapes and sizes, so you can reach down and straighten the pins.
Then slowly insert the CF card and seat it firmly. CF cards have true pins, unlike an SD card which has a rail that rides on the metal teeth on the card, so be gentle.

Another good reason to not remove the card is you might forget to remove it from your computer and go on a shoot and leave the card behind, it happened to me a couple weeks ago.

I have a Canon Rebel Xti with bent cf pins. I could trade it in for an upgrade or send it in for a repair for a couple hundred bucks or I could do what someone recently did with a magnifying glass and a mini-screwdriver and repaired it themselves. It is a risk but the camera continues to sit for yet another year while I don't pursue any type of photography lifestyle or challenge and everything I learned is forgotten. I really don't have the money to donate to Canon even on the best days. So do I run the risk of ruining my camera even further or do I just take the chance and make it functioning so I can enjoy the pleasures of my DSLR once again. Your thoughts and recommendations?

Maureen,
Buy a set of long nose, needle nosed pliers. These have to open just a little at a long distance explain what you need to the sales people. This will allow you to straighten the pins easier with less chance of breaking them. Also buy a lighted magnifying glass. Hope this helps.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanakkah.

if you do it yourself be sure and remove all the batteries you want to make sure you don't short anything and create more problems ( I made that mistake once with another problem the repair guy told me to never stick anyhting in a camera with the battery in it burned out the power supply)

WOW, thank you so much! I never would have thought of that. I can't tell you how many times I have put something down that shaft trying to figure out why my camera wouldn't respond. Have a happy Christmas!

Maureen - find someone with steady hands. Then once fixed USE THE USB CORD and leave the disc in the camera. I have a Canon XTi also and love it. Used to take the card out til I read a few stories like yours - it don't come out no more. The cord stays plugged into my computer and it's really easier just to plug the cord into the camera.

Maureen, Hope you get this problem taken care of. Then afterwards, we are going to spank you all the way to Friday. Don't you ever do that again. Merry Christmas.

I felt the same way when people told me that cleaning my sensor was akin to brain surgery. Piece of cake !

If the pins are only slightly bent and you have a steady hand they can be straightened. I have been working on PC's for 30 years and it is usually not a problem. However if they are bent bad and you do manage to straighten them enough to work they will never be as strong as they once were. In this case, depending on how much you love the camera, the $200 repair may be the best choice as you will get all new pins. Your call!

the price of the new pins is the same regardless so by all means try. As someone already said, its already not working.

Try to fix it on your own and if unsuccessful then whenever you have the funds, you can then take it in for repair. If you are successful you will not only have immediate use of your camera again but you won't have been out any money!

I had the exact same thing happen to me with my Digital Rebel. I went to a local camera store and they looked up the cost of fixing it, which would have required shipping it back to canon and around 189 bucks plus shipping and any parts. They had a two generation newer one used for 200 bucks that someone had traded in on another camera - I bought the trade camera and my son was able to straighten out the pin on the older one - which now works like a charm again. So now I have two cameras for what the repair cost would have been - I say try to fix it if you are handy at all or have a friend or relative that is good at that sort of stuff try it. Canon's web site will give you an idea of repair costs because they have set fees for various things. Another plus was that all my old lens worked with the newer body. and many of the features were the same so I already knew how to use the newer one.

If you're mechanically inclined, read all of the above and go for it.
I once fixed my favorite coffee maker that quit and wasn't made anymore, turned out to be an open thermal fuse and I cleaned all the hoses and channels and it worked like new.
The only problem is you gain so much confidence you end up fixing everything else that quits. Sort of a fetish I guess.
At one time I fixed the wife's ailing mixer and it made her mad because she didn't like the mixer in the first place.
