Planning trip to Washington-Oregon
If you have the time pull off into every park and wide spot on the road, you will not be disappointed.
just north of Cape Foulweather there is the short old coast road, take that it is very scenic.

If you want to do just the coast check out the lighthouses and most of them are on the road signs. My favorite is the Bandon light but they are all interesting. Some of the bridges were built during the depression and are beautiful in a way that wouldn't happen today. When you go to old town Newport the bridge is just to the west. Go down to the harbor in Depoe Bay and you can get some great shots of the bridge and the small opening to the sea,. South the spots west of CoosBay include a neat harbor at Charleston, and then continue west to Shoreacres which is the garden area of one of the early timber barons. After that go about another 1/4 mile to photograph a large group of seals. If you have time when you get to GoldBeach take a mail boat up the Rogue. Many things to shoot and a great lunch at the top end. These are just a few. Have fun and send us some photo's. I almost forgot to mention that September is a great month. It can rain but the crowds are gone and most days should be nice. Mike

Well if you get as close as Brookings come another 30 miles and you would have beautiful Redwoods and more wonderful coastline in Del Norte County, or Crescent City, CA.... there is so much to see down the coast or inward, you might even have time to go up the Rogue River on a Mail Boat ride.... But do enjoy your trip. So much to see, so little time to see it....
Air museum in Tillimook (I think that's how you spell it) is in an old blimp hanger. Some cool old planes there.

Close. Tillamook. And they make a pretty good cheddar at the Tillamook Cheese Factory...
Hey there. I am fortunate enough to have traveled up and down the Oregon coast many, many times for photographic opps. There are so many places to fall in love with and many popular photographic spots. In my opinion, the best shots require some physical fitness to traverse a varying landscape such as climbing sand dunes at Cape Kiwanda, descending and ascending a 45 degree slope on a 3 foot wide "trail" that literally drops off into the sea at Samuel Boardman State Park, or perusing the tidepools with your camera gear at Yachats, Cook's Chasm, and Devil's Churn at Cape Perpetua. If you are looking for great waterfalls shots, I've done that too all over Oregon. PM me and maybe we can set up a time to meet, etc. when you are in my neck of the woods. Cheers!
Didn't start this but I want to say mahalo to all. I will be driving from San Diego to Port Angeles up the Coast route this coming September. You are all giving us such wonderful ideas on where to go and visit and take pictures. Only wish we had more time for the trip as there is so much to see, do and photograph. Again mahalo.
Hi, My husband grew up in Sequim, WA, right next to Port Angeles and some of his family still live there. Weather-wise I'd recommend late August or September, often their best time of year. For beautiful scenery, don't miss Olympic National Park, specifically Hurricane Ridge. The road to it is between Sequim and PA. The first time I went up there it looked to me like how I imagine it would be in the Alps. Lake Crescent and Lake Ozette are beautiful places in that area too.
And the Oregon coast is gorgeous. I'm attaching a shot I got last summer in Newport. Have a wonderful trip!
Maybe you can get some souvenirs!
Here are two from my favorite coastal town on the Central Oregon coast: Yachats (pronounced-- "yuh-HOTS), known as the "Pearl of the Pacific". I've probably been there more than 40 times over the years....
These were taken in November of last year.
Cannon Beach is a trendy, "arty" town on the north coast-- spendy, but site of the most photographed rock on the Oregon Coast: Hay Stack Rock.
Enjoy your trip-- but be cautious on the rocks-- watch for "sneaker waves" . Every year some unsuspecting tourist is caught in one of these....
Lived in OR. & WA all my life. There is many wonderful photo apportunitiy,s awaiting you. 101 is one of the most scenic drives in the country. In Port Angeles you can cross on the fairy to Victoria B.C. & visit Olympic National Park, Hurricane Ridge with stunning views of the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Many lighthouses along WA & OR 101. Head south to Long Beach, WA. You can drive your car on the beach there. Cross the Columbia River to Astoria, OR. A great maritime museum is there. Fort Meriweather were Lewis & Clark wintered. If you make it clear down to Bandon, OR check out the Wildlife Park there. Many exotics. Take a lot of memory cards. Enjoy
Northhead Lighthouse at Cape Dissapointment
Just a note. Many of WA state parks require a Discover Pass. Its 30$. A good investment since most day use passes are 5$ & the fine is 105$ Good for a year & 2 vehicles. Believe Or has the same thing.
As Odd Jobber has stated US 101 is not built to make a fast trip. Most of it is two lanes. However, there are wonderful photo opps along the trip. You should plan twice as much time as you first think you need.
I just got back, yesterday from a Photography workshop in Portland... waterfalls, Mt. Hood, etc. Then my friend and I drove to the coast.
We started in Lincoln City,OR. and went south. There is no down side to this drive. The lighthouses, the state parks, accommodations, beauty of the coast... it's amazing. I took just under a thousand photos of water falls (Columbia River area), ocean beaches, small towns and seagulls.
If you have time and you're coming into California on 101, at least drive to Trinidad, above Eureka, CA. It's a photo shoot all by itself. The water and the rocks are like being in Capri, Italy. The color of the water is amazing.
Have a good trip!
