Sandhill Crane Family

Today 6/12/13 I visited the family. It was my intention to wait a while so I would see some growth in the chicks and so my last visit was on the 2nd of June. It is with a heavy heart that I report one of the chicks is gone ....... The remaining chick has grown somewhat and his/her feathers have taken on the bluish gray of the parents. The neck and head still mark the bird as an adolescent. The family has taken up residence on the opposite side of the small lake. I will be taking movies soon; I want to catch the baby's early flights. Really sorry about the other chick. I can tell that the parents are really trying hard to do the right thing. Search Sandhill Crane Family for earlier pictures.

Sandhill cranes typically will raise just one chick. Usually they lay two eggs and, if both hatch, will only pay attention to the stronger chick. We learned that down in Florida there are rescue groups that watch for this to happen and then attempt to distract the parents and rescue the neglected chick.

Thank you for your comment and the parents doted over both chicks. If you search SANDHILL CRANE FAMILY you will see earlier pictures from the day they were born up until about 10 days ago. Both colts were doing just fine ... something bad happened.
