Is the Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 with Quick release compatible with a Manfrotto 496RC2 or will I need an attachment?

Not sure what you mean by "compatible". They are both ball heads, but have very different quick release mechanisms.

Sorry, the Manfrotto came with a ballhead that I would like to replace with the Arca-Swiss

If you are talking about your legs, then yes, they are compatible with either head. The tripod legs today almost all come with a standard 3/8" thread mount, as do all quality heads making them all interchangeable. It sounds like you have a Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto 496RC2 head on them. You have not said what legs you are using though. Simply remove that head and install the Arca head in its place.

I'm sorry but I did not adequately state my problem. I have a Manfrotto 190L tripod that came with a 496RC2 ballhead. I would like to replace it with the Arca-Swiss Monoball Z-1. The Arca-Swiss does not seem to be the same size and I wonder if some sort of attachment is necessary.

The bases of the heads are a different diameter, but will exchange. I question the reasoning behind putting the Heavy Arca Swiss head on such a light tripod though, its a bit of overkill. That head is rated at 132 pounds and the legs are rated at 11 pounds.

I agree. I'm awaiting a better tripod to go with a 70-200 lens that I ordered. The Arca-Swiss was delivered first and I wanted to try it out.
