Any suggestions for beginner editing Software? Preferably free.
Picasa has just added features to it's free editing tools. It has a lot of neat features and is very simple to operate. Download it free form Google. Having said that I have just purchased and yet to load Adobe Elements bundle with Premium video editing software. I have some video clips I need to stitch into something.
This will require time and effort to learn. wish me luck. JB
Be aware that picassa will try to make you install other software and that is a pain. Install on the 'custom mode' to avoid changes to your computer environment.

Free editing software will not get you the results that can be obtained by programs such as Elements. You get what you pay for.
For someone who starts $0.00 is enough. There is no need for anything else, only the user will decide, once he has mastered the concepts of photo editing, to move onto something more powerful and also free like GIMP.
The concept 'you get what you pay for' is way too dismissive. You should look onto the GNU licensing before making statement like that.
While I do not use Picassa many folks here are happy with it. Telling them they are using a 'piece of crap' because it is free is not a fair statement.
Easy Big bad Wolf, Hiker is just expressing his opion. Thank you both for the suggestions. I will check them both out free purchasable.
Thanks
Picasa is great for quick and easy adjustments like red eye, cropping and simple color adjustments. Good for a beginner. It's also very easy to use. I'd definitely try it to get your feet wet with editing.
IM LOOKING FOR A SOFTWARE TO.WILL PICASA HELP ME WITH INFRARED PHOTO'S I NEVER SHOT INFRARED PICS YET.WHAT IS A GOOD INFRARED FILTER.I HAVE A NIKON D3000 AND A NIKON 3100 CAMERA.THE 2 LENSES IM THINKING ABOUT USING IS A NIKON 18-55 KIT OR MY NIKON 35 F/1.8 LENS.OUT OF THEM 2 LENSES WHAT LENS WOULD BE BETTER TO USE.
I have used Picasa, Corel Paintshop Pro, Lightroom and Adobe Elements. I have also had the opportunity to use Adobe photoshop.
Sometimes it depends on what you are wanting to achieve as to which program is "right" for you.
There is no wrong choice. Before spending a dime, I would download picasa and try it. If you get everything you are looking for with it, then, awesome.
Next, I would download the free trial versions of both Corel Paintshop Pro and Adobe Photoshop. The difference in the two programs is primarily, for me anyway, the price. You can get Corel Paintshop pro for approximately 89.00 and Adobe Photoshop is, oh, about 10 times that much. Of course, you can try elements, which you can get for the same price, there about, as Corel's paintshop pro.
Try the free versions and see if you even use them that much. Remember that the more you edit, the more you learn how to edit and the more you want to edit. When I first started out, Picasa was fine for me, but now, I rely on Corel Paintshop pro for the heavy duty stuff. I'm still learning and consider myself a "newbie".
Good luck to you in whatever you do finally settle on.

Don't overlook Nikon's CaptureNX - not free, not as all encompassing as Photoshop or PaintShop Pro, but quitw powerful, easy to use and learnign curve is not as steep
Bob, I've never heard of that one. I have a Canon, so, that is probably why, but, if it works with Canon products, I'm willing to give any software a shot :)
There is no free lunch. Why would you be willing to spend that kind of money on cameras and lenses and then cheap out on how you will post process the photos.
It's like buying a pro DSLR, very expensive lenses but then getting all of your printing done at Walmart or CVS or some other place where you can get cheap prints.
I don't know why you would want to experiment with InfraRed photography and think that a free program will be at all good. That doesn't make sense. You don't have to spend mega bucks for PS, but there are some really good programs for a fraction of that cost. I'm not a fan of PS, but PS Elements has gotten some great reviews. And that is under $100.00.
Corel Paintshop x4 is on sale for 49.99 at corel.com. Its a good program that'll grow with you. From basic editing functions to in-depth.

NIK develeoped it for Nikon. To the best of my knowledge it works with any JPEG or TIFF but the ONLY raw file it will open is Nikon's (NEF)

How ironic.
You expressed your displeasure at English Wolf expressing his displeasure!
Not all opinions are equal and valid...shocker! Some opinions can be ....wrong!
The fact is...it's true that just because something is free doesn't make it useless or crap...and while "you get what you pay for" is true in many cases, it's also not true in many cases.
