Please share your expertise on safely taking cameras and a big lens (500mm) on a cross-country airline trip. What type/brand case? Special considerations? Thank you!

I have always taken my camera gear bag as carry-on. I've seen the way they handle baggage all too often.

Or invest in a Pelican Case. These cases are awesome at protecting expensive items.

Does Pelican offer a carry-on case large enough to hold a Nikon 500mm lens and camera, and yet small enough to meet airline carry-on requirements?

In a car? RV? Motorcycle ? Backpacking ?

Oh, airline ? I put my cameras in a backpack with lens at the bottom and side and small pockets for SD Cards, batteries and charger.

Backpack is carry on and your stuff is always right there with you and easier to carry..

I'm inclined to agree with Sarge69 with one minor exception. I would first roll up a jacket, heavy sweater or beach towel for the bottom of the pack in order to cushion the lens from impact when setting the backpack down.

Only carry on, no way would I let baggage handlers throw them about however well padded the bag, plus I have had two cases go missing to turn up months later half empty

I take my 500 lens with me and use a Think Tank Airport Roller Bag to carry on all my camera gear (tripods etc goes in the checked baggage) fits in the over head. I do not take the hood but use an AquaTech Soft Hood which lays flat in my checked luggage

I always always keep my camera with me. However, if I am staying 4 days or more in one location I ship some of my camera equipment a head ( not large lens) packed in e extra clothing.this has worked well for me.

You shouldn't consider any thing other than carry on for your camera gear. In no circumstances put it in the hands of the ----------- baggage handlers.

Always carry on any photo equipment . Never let the baggage handlers get their hands on it . I do use a carry on Pelican case but do not own a 500mm lens and am not sure if the case can handle such a lens . Go on line for Pelican and check them out.
