Hello to all uhh members. As hobbiest and amature photographers what do we as individuals look at when we comment on post that other members have put on uhh?I have looked at other forums as I am sure a lot of you have.By far I feel that uhh is one of the best out there.I am no pro just a guy who loves the art of photography and taking pictures of things of interest to me not just the beauty of the art. Here is a list of things I look at when I comment on a members post.

1- composition

2- exposure

3- detail in the subject. Some times even a door knob can have some fantastic detail.(victorian error)

4-color reds are a big one for me.

5-finally the beauty of the shot. This is cliche (beauty is in the eye of the beholder)

What are some of the things that other members look at when commenting on post.Since joining uhh I have learned a lot from other members and sometimes members come out with other ideas we all can learn from. Please post some of what you look at and ideas so I can feed of that I am always hungry when it comes to our art.Photography is one art and hobbie where you can teach and old dog new tricks. :D :D got to love it!

What do I see the very first time I look at a photo? Does it evoke emotion and do I want to keep looking?
Are my eyes drawn to the watermark in the corner or to the tree that's growing out of the subject's head?
Does the photo tell a story?
Do I want it technically correct?
(I'm thinking of one particular example: a photo I took of chipmunks stealing some breadcrumbs from beside the picnic table in our campground. I have had many comments that this photo was way too dark - therefore technically incorrect? No, it was just after sun-down, and the environment WAS dark. To me it has always been the perfect photo).

When I see a photo on UHH (or any where for that matter) sometimes it just jumps out and grabs my attention. I'll comment on that.

Comments are subjective I just try not to be to critical and usually a suggestion of how I would do something is part of my comment. Criticizing without help is pointless. Don't be cruel particularly with pics you know are shot by a newbee. I checked out your pics and you do tend to underexpose landscapes but that is good when you think about it. The old film days "Expose for the shadows Develop for the Highlights" still holds. You can always post process underexposure but you can't do much with overexposure--Once it's gone --it's gone. there are some nice shots in that group. My bad habit is to fill the frame too much. I'm working on that

Actually the first thing is that the pic grabs my attention. After that you can judge the composition, exposure, etc, etc. But first of all, does it get your attention. The rest follows naturally for me.

Thank you for looking at my pictures and commenting on the post. You nailed it on my landscape photos I do underexpose them. This habit did come from the film days.I also will always try and find positives and offer to help if it is possible.A great way of looking at it.I enjoyed the responses on this post it sure does open my eyes and try and get a better understanding of peoples view.I have been shooting since 1979 and still learn from others as that should always be the goal.
:-D :-D

Hi Al!
I really liked your approach to all things that make a good shot work! As a retired amateur, I like to grab shots that are often just plain & simply pleasing to look at, and then again, others that might make folks "think" a little bit more when they view 'em. Having a graphics background, I very often like to use post processing in order to really manipulate images into "artistic pieces" or ones that might evoke emotions! I've got a lot of my favorite work on my PhotoPhorum website at : http://www.angelfire.com/ejlphotos/index.html
Stop by my site for a fun visit, and please do let me know what you think..new ideas are always appreciated!!
