I got a 50mm macro lens last winter and have been anticipating the summer critters. Here's a few shots.
C&C welcome.
Great shots Christy.Like #1 for sure.
These are wonderful. I was told to get a 105mm because my 35mm required getting too close, but your photos are really good with the 50mm. Now, I'm a little confused about which is best. Can you please give us more info about how far away you were and the settings on your camera? I would appreciate it a lot.
Riverlass, I was pretty close. Probably 3"-6". The pictures are all cropped. The frog was 1/250, f5.0, ISO 200. He was such a good model. He stayed wherever I put him like a little pro. I have a shot of him on my pinky finger and various other poses.
The fly was 1/200, 5.0, ISO 100.
The bee was 1/60, 4.0, ISO 250.

Distance between lens front element and subject is called Working Distance (WD).
With a macro lens, true macro capture is at Minimum Working Distance (MWD).
This UHH thread will answer your question about MFD for different length macro lenses:

He's so cute... and looks like he's smiling. Love the one on your finger. I see why the 105mm is good for me. I don't have to crop with it and I can catch 1:1 easier from a little further away. I just need to practice.
Your photos are so clear and sharp. An inspiration for all of us.
