I have a D5100 and it does that also. It is showing you the blown out highlights. You just need to hit the up or down button to change what is displayed. It took me a while to figure out that I had hit that button by mistake.

Have you made the selection sRGB yet? If not, consult your manual and make this selection.

You have to select either sRGB or adobe rgb. As I understand it, adobe rgb is more for photos being taken for print purposes, so sRGB should be selected for most photographic purposes.

I also have the D7100 and recommend becoming very familiar with all the functions. The manual is very good and a few hours spent playing with the various options is well spent. Also Nikon now have an App for the iPhone (don't know about the others) that allows you to have the Manual on your phone or iPad for easy access when you do not have the manual with you. Recommend that as well.

On the disk that has the manual on it, there is a pdf file of the manual. You can copy it to your phone easily with a usb cable. You will need a pdf reader on your phone, but adobe reader is a free app. I did this with my manual and have it with me all the time ...unless I lose my phone.

Recommend you buy "NikonD7100 For Dummies" by the author who writes these books. On sale at Amazon for $19.00. Due out in July.

The best after market camera manual you can buy is from "rockynook" press, Mastering the Nikon D7100 by Darrel Young. The first time I came across this type of manual is when I had my D300s, since then I have purchased all my manuals for the D600 and D7000. I have purchase other camera manual in the past, but none of them can compare to the rockynook manuals and are as easy to follow along. I am not sure if the D7100 is out on press yet, but when it is, grab it as soon as you can. "You will never go back to any other manuals.

Ok all you Nikon experts out there..next question!..lol.. Active D Lighting and bright sunlight what do they have if anything in common and do you or what do you use it for...I had a photo shoot this past Saturday at a outdoor rest late in the afternoon from 4pm to about 8..bright sunlight was shining directly on me could not hide from it bc of the nature of the event..with lots of shadows..used Active D lighting on normal mode thinking it might help...does that have any bearing on bright sunlight and what is it used for exactly...read about it in the manual but still not exactly sure. anyone know out there?... here are the photos from the event take a look and let me know what you think... thank you..
