I wonder if these were the same guys who created dummy aircraft in Britain earlier in the war to fool the Germans about Allied strength and disposition.

We also had dummy ports as well. They were just lights spread out over open countryside and fooled the night-time bombers. I think there was one near Hull on the north-east coast and one at Southampton. There were dummy airfields with inflatable aircraft and net gun emplacements that were used in the North African desert campaign.
