I will do my utmost to bring out in your daughter the beautfiful young lady she is. Hopefully she isn't a spoiled rotten person.
Roger,
Thank you for starting my day off with a laugh. I like the first part that should work.
Merry Christmas

Oh my fellow Ohioan...ask more questions! Have the mom explain what she is really asking for...is it the pose...smile..etc!

Ummm this girl looks nothing like my daughter...(well she could if she weighed 40lbs less, had dark hair and..well you get the idea)
I just have no idea what she is "looking for" with that comment/ request.
How do you respond to that type of "request"?
Dria,
Is there any feature the girl has that looks somewhat like the mother, if so mention it. Then take the best photo you can. Best thing, compliment the daughter, get on her side.
Have a Very Merry Christmas
George
No one on Earth thinks they look good in photographs, so you know you cannot please all the people all the time.
Do your best to create a phoito that brings out their best features and if they complain hand out a local plastic surgeon's card. They say the camera doesn't lie.

Well, I know that image in the mirror certainly doesn't look like me!

This is exactly why my Father-in-law who was one of the best photographers I knew, and who got me started in the "business," always said he hated doing portraits. Ugly people are always convinced that it is the camera, not their faces.
Ouch..... but in my experince now.... too true.

I know this doesn't help, but the first thing I thought of was... Photoshop. Someone may have mentioned this but I didn't read though all the post.

She probably means lighting, pose, posture, hairstyle, makeup...no parent wants a clone of someone else's child. There is always a disconnect between the photog and the check writer...they just don't know how to ask for what they want. That is why photography is a craft.
Give her a photo of your daughter.
Here's one rough method. Takes a few minutes in photoshop. Before and after.

Give her a photograph of your daughter and say "I am amazed at how much your daughter looks like mine, can you believe it?" and then she will be getting exactly what she asked for!
Yes, I know most people don't like their photos. That is why most poeple don't look like their avatars.

I tried that with this customer ..... it didn't work
Have you considered buying a brown paper bag?
There was a story about the kings cloths and it seems appropriate here.
Do your best. They will pick out the shot they like the best.
