OK I found this old hand tool in a box of old knives I bought from and Estate Sale.
This belonged to the family's grandfather who hand made hunting knives for a hobby. The family could not tell me what this tool was used for.
It is 9" long. and has two brackets on each end. Any idea's.

It looks like an old barbeque grill, wire brush handle. I have seen something like it before where the wire brush is replacable and the handle is the keeper. :?: :| :?

My husband's guess was it might be a handle for a file. You would be able to attach a different file depending on what you were doing.

I think Country's Mama's husband came close; but, not quite on the money. Like the family's grandfather, I too have been involved in knife making and collecting. I have not seen one of these in a very long time, and if it has specific name I don't recall. You would put sharpening stones into this handle (tighten them down), and use this to hone and sharpen knife blades. . .generally on larger fixed blade knives. All done by hand and by eye, at angles known only to the ancient ones. . .

I believe it is for burnishing metal like knifes and woodworking tools the sharp edge would be pressed down and slid/rubbed on the more pointed part and and it will simply smooth out the steel and make it flat and smooth when you do this on both sides of a knife it will produce a wire edge next you strop the knife on leather and break off the wire edge. thats my guess
