Cameras On Planes

My father worked for Fairchild Camera during 1945-70. He
worked for different divisions. But they made mostly all the
cameras for use on war planes. All the old footage seen on the
newsreels and later in movies and TV was theirs.

How much different are the cameras of today compared to
WWII and Korea & Iraq, etc. The old stuff may or may not be
unclassified. Just wondering. Thank you for your attention.

The SLRs are light-years apart. All but the most basic film SLRs automated features. Technology has improved lenses, especially zooms, immensely. Smaller components allow more features without increasing size.

I can't speak for the aircraft cameras, but I would think it's like other pieces of hardware. Think about a F18, then look at a Corsair or Hellcat.

My name is papatutu, and i just purchased a Canon DSLR D60, and so far i love it it takes great photo's. The lens that came with it is the 18X200, and I just purchased the 50mm 1/4 wide angle, mainly for close ups of the grand children. I'm sure i will be asking for advice from time to time, i know there are some very intelligent photographers in this forum.

I had the 7D and sold it for the D60 because it is lighter and they do the same thing as far as I can tell. You will love the L lens. I use the 70-200 is L 2.8 more than most of the other L lens. Here are some samples. Have fun with your camera.

Don't know about the gun cameras', but the 12x12 and 5x7 roll film cameras were used (maybe still are) for aerial photography at lease until about 15 years ago. At low altitudes, they were very sharp. We used them to develop contour maps in sterio pairs.

Just attended a show and tell talk by and Army "photojournalist"... not many good photos, but she used a newer model Nikon DSLR for about 250-400 pics a day in Iraq. No combat photography was taken by this individual.
