My camera is the Nikon d80 – waiting on the d300s upgrade – but – that is not the question or issue – the question concerns Flash Memory Cards

For years I have used six eight gb sandisk cards – class 4 cards – lost one or two – one has stopped working – it is time to buy new – in addition getting ready to spend a week or three abroad

I am looking at sandisk –ultra – 32 gb – class 10 and a similar 64 gb
the 32 gb is an sdhc and the 64 gb is an sdxc

What is you thinking – any suggestions

You have a world of choices. I've settled on Sandisk 16GB Class 10. I usually use Wi-Fi cards, but when I'm traveling, I bring several Sandisk cards. You camera manual will probably recommend a minimum Class.

Like buying tires for your car, SD cards are not an area where you want to get the cheapest. Here's a link to the cards that are available. They keep getting better, faster, and cheaper, so don't mortgage the house to load up on them.

I agree. Personally, I use 8 and 16gb cards from Lexar and Sandisk.

I prefer these sizes to having one large card. The small inconvenience of swapping cards is nothing compared to having a day or two's worth of pictures lost because the large card goes south.

The reasons there are many kinds of memory cards are there are many kinds of uses.

How do you want to use it?
What are your fears?
What kind of camera?
How much do you want to spend.
What other devices do you use with them?
How patient are you with downloading the data.
The list goes on.
Everyone is different.

I need both SD and CD for my gear.
I have a 36MP hog camera that needs more capacity.
I like 10X speed for faster processing of captures.
I download after every shoot everyday.
When traveling I use many cards for saving and later processing.
I like dependable high quality cards.

Like me, you've been able to find reasons to buy stuff. Good for you.

You say that when you travel, you keep the full cards till you can process them later. That's all you do, then? You don't put the images onto some other kind of storage? I've considered getting one of those portable hard drives that don't need a computer to accept images from an SD card, but the reviews were not very good. I'll wait till they get better.

just because they say class 10 does not mean all cards are equal...class 10 cards can have different write speeds...get the fastest write speed you can afford...especially if you shoot sports and shoot in continuos mode...

Like many other things, there are just too many variations. Since all the cards are the same physical size, they would probably save on production costs by cutting down the variety of cards. Make them all the highest speed, and have the minimum storage size 16GB. it would be easier for sellers to stock them, too.

I use SanDisc 16GB class 10. The 32GB is fine, but keeping very many shots on the same disc could be risky if that disc gets lost or corrupted.

Toad,

There are many counterfeit cards out there, so be careful if you buy online. Having said that, you can save considerably when you buy online. SanDisk, Kensington, and especially no-name are frequently counterfeited, wherein some scumbag will change either the capacity or the class printed on the card. You might pay for a 32GB class 10 but get an 8GB class 2.

I like the Sony class 10 cards. I found 32GB class 10 Sonys for $20 (US) on an ebay daily special, and I still see them for about $22-24 from reputable ebay sellers and from Amazon sellers (I live in a tiny town distant from any city, so I buy everything online.)

Just saying, caveat emptor.

Check your manual to see if D80 supports a card that large. It may not.

Following up on the counterfeit card response. Many counterfeit cards are discards from reputable manufacturers that did not pass quality control. More counterfeit cards are the big capacity, high speed cards (would you counterfeit $1 bills?)

On the discards from rep mfrs, the serial number has not been stamped into the back of the plastic shell. Try to check that online???? not gonna happen.

I use 8 Gb cards and rotate, due to the local and true story about the wedding photographer who changed from film to digital. He shot his first digital capture wedding on a 32 Gb card, that failed when he got it to his computer. Check cards before you use them. His mistake was stupid, but hey!

Have you ever filled a 16 gig card then downloaded them . You will have one big pile of pic to go through . It is that reason that i mostly use 8gig san disk . Most of the time im using 4 gig cards at 30mbs. I will shoot buildings with one . Sea side with another . Street people market vendors buskers , with another . You dont need the high gig cards with the 100gb a second . Only if your a paparazzie and never take your finger of the shutter . There are a lot of people out there that think they must have a really fast card . What they fail to acknoweledg is that there camera may only be capable of 3 pic a second . There buffer is filled almost right away . The 30mbs cards are over kill in this scene. But im using 30 mbpsecond san disk from cosco. Or buy a sluge of them in after christmas sales

I seldom fill a card, but it's nice to know that I have the ability to record a lot of video if I want to. At HD, what is it, 30 minutes of video costs you 4GB? I'd rather have a bit of extra memory than run out, especially because I like to shoot video with my pics and I'll do more of that with my Olympus SZ-31MR that I just ordered. Included in that camera's virtual arsenal of features is the ability to record HD video and take HD photos simultaneously.

So, I guess it comes down to usage. As long as you have a quality, fast card and enough capacity to suit your needs, you're set.
