I am taking the Basic Digital Photography Course. I found out that I am not a good candidate for home study--don't have the discipline. However, I am not interested in a certificate, only honing my skills. They finally dropped the price to under $300. 3 years to complete the course for a certificate. They have gotten good reviews everywhere I've read. They are accredited as an educational institution in New York. I probably started the course too early--in the winter when it was difficult to practice. Am catching up now that the weather is nicer.

I briefly dated a woman who was taking the NYI classes. The part of the photo assignments I saw were specific like a photo of flowere, a roadway, or a sunset etc. Then you photos are evaluated by the NYI staff. You can do that here on UHH. There are contests and a weekly assignment blog.

Then there is just the fundamental learning skill of just taking as many photos as you can.

You can also go to

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-online-camera-simulators-photography-beginners/

which will give you links to three camera simulators which you can play with from the comfort of your home.

I took the NYIP Fundamentals of Digital Photography course last year and for me it was great and definitely worth the money. But I agree, if you express some interest but wait, they will send you an offer eventually for a much reduced price. Ii think I paid about $500. For me, the most valuable part of the course is your advisor. Mine is great and has become a friend and continues to provide me with helpful advice and encouragement even though I completed the course about a year ago. But whether or not you hit it off as well with your advisor, their advice is available indefinitely once you enroll in a course. You have a separate instructor who critiques the projects you submit.
I learned so much from the fundamentals course that I considered taking the course for professionals. But my advisor told me that unless I was interested in some very specific types of photography covered in that course, I had already learned most of what was taught.
BTW, my photography is greatly improved and I often get comments about it being at a professional level now.

FYI: There is a free online camera course available through Practical Photography magazine, all you have to do is go to www.camera-school and signup, it's all FREE!. You don't have to subscribe to the magazine you can purchase copies at Hastings her in town. The course will run over the next 6 issues, the first issue covers Landscapes and is on the shelf now. This a great opertunity to expand your skills for only the purchase price of a magazine the rest is FREE! Click on the link and check it out.

Other than the course this magazine has a ton of information that will improve your photography.

Other magazines that are helpful are: Digital Camera & Digital Photo. Both come with free CD's teaching editing tips and techniques.

I would think that that would be a bargain if any type of degree is the result.

'hobbiest'? I'm sure you mean "hobbyist". Otherwise look up your word and find strange definitions for it.

Yes, its worth it. But if you send for info and don't enroll within about 30 days they will send you a DEEPLY discounted offer IF you pay full tuition or 2 payments. Its worth waiting for the discount!

Terri,
I am a grad of NYSOP some years ago. I wanted to get an update in digital Photography. My local Community College has many on-line courses ubder the banner of ed2go.com.
I took an on-line course on Digital Photo. It was great for what I wanted. The course usually costs $70. but if you are 65 or +, it costs $5.00...at least at my CC. Course has 12 lessons, 2/week for 6 weeks. Each lesson has a quiz and then a final at the end.
I don't know what you want to get out of this but if it's just to be updated, check your local Comm. College..ask about the ed2go program on-line. Dick Feecteau

Did it in early 80s. Those who haven't done it and graduated have no good reason to knock it,or speculate if not looking into it. Saichiez said it all very well here on page 2. It did used to be located brick&mortar and went mail after WWII realizing not everyone could relocate to the few places that offered instruction at the time. It is just about 100 yrs. old now.Does that say anything for success and experience? So do it!!
You can pick up a lot of misinformation in the el cheapo DIY study, neglect info you need, and BTW you can get a lot of misinfo right here on UH...just read some of these threads and see it everyday!!!

I took the course in the eighties and got a lot out of it. It was worth the money to have an instructor review my work. I had read just about every book available at the time. The course helped me test all the knowledge with practical applications. This is something reading books hadn't done for me.

Save yourself a lot of money. Go out and shoot shoot and shoot some more. Then go on the kelby training site and watch all of the videos there for a year and it is only $199.
It will be money well spent.

Im a NYIP grad from way back in the early 50s. I still have my books and tests up in my attic. When I went for my first pro job with a large studio and told the owner I was a NYIP grad he said when can you start? He had been a NY city photographer before he moved to Pa. This guy had won all kind of awards. And thats why I wanted to work for him. I have to admit I learned more from this guy than I ever could in any photo school. When I first started working for him he took me along with him on every wedding he done. He explained the why and how and what to avoid on every shot he took. He gave me a hasslblad and told me the shots he wanted me to take. After a short time he sent me out alone to do weddings. He did things a little differant. He always had all our photos printed in 8X10s. Each wedding would take up two albums. He kept five photographers on staff. We all had to go in friday night to go over the weddings we had shot the week before. He went throught every photo and tell us if we could have improved the shot. Ill never forget the first wedding I done on my own. One of the photos I took in the brides bedroom in the backgrond there was a hanger on the curten rod. I never made that blunder again. So to make a allready long story short. Any schooling is great for what ever you can learn. But you cant beat learning from a good experanced pro. When I retired in 93 I tried to find a young man to teach the busness. No one was intrested. I know Dig Is a whole new ballgame. We used to shoot ten rolls of 120 film. That was 12 exp.=120 shots. And we didn't miss anything. Its beyond my why today they shoot thousands. The last weddind my wife and I went to. The photographre must of had his D4 nikon set on machine gun mode. Every time he pressed the sutter the camera took at least three shots. I still have my deploma from NYIP.

I took and completed their course in 1971 and found it excellent in basic film photography.
I recently applied for the Digital course and was prepared to take it until I found out that it requires the purchase of Photoshop at an additional cost of over $500.
Since I do not plan to be a "Professional Photographer" I chose to learn from the library and you folks.
Good luck and if it's not fun stop doing it.

I took the NYIP full professional course about two years ago. I paid the total cost up front. That saved me about $200 or so off the payment plan and also gave me motivation to finish. The course is chock full of information and suggestions to try with your new hobby/profession. There are lots of materials to go through, read and digest. The course has been shifting focus (no pun intended) from film to digital, but still there are materials that are dated. I guess it's very expensive to produce those glossy booklets. (But again, I took it two years ago, so that might not be as much of a concern now.) Tests are a joke and poorly written. But the feedback from the professional photographers was encouraging and helpful.
I took the NYIP full professional course about two... (show quote)

Well,as I said Bram boy, if you didn't do it why should you knock it. If you sold encyclopedia would I say it is no ggod if
not knowing? If the "suckers',as you call them, signed up and finished and recommend it that should tell you something. BTW, they don't "pray" on suckers, and it sure beats a "liebray",whatever that is....
