I've tried finding BBF in the manual for my Canon 450D, without success. Does that capability exist on the 450D? Anyone point me to where it is described for the 450D? Thanks in advance.

It's in your custom function menu...the part about assigning functions to certain buttons. Each button can have several different function; exposure, AF, both, neither...etc.

OK, AE Lock ... I was looking for back button focus. But it sounds as if I still need to use the shutter button halfway and then press the * button: I guess I need to read more of the posts on back button focus to understand this better. My assumption was that you would press a button instead of the shutter button. Thanks.

You can use a different button but you must choose and assign the button for focusing that you desire. Reread Rpavich's suggestion

No...you can put the AE lock and the AF lock on the same button.
